(Naughty bits omitted in order to keep this SFW, while also fully displaying Reina's physique.)

A friend of mine had in the past expressed some confusion over the construction of Reina's cybernetic limbs.  This series of illustrations helped to clear up his confusion, and hopefully will help out anyone else's uncertainty.

The structure of Reina's cybernetic limbs echoes that of natural human limbs- a rigid endoskeleton supporting a series of interleaved synthetic muscle bundles, covered in a flexible tactile-sensory "skin".  The inner frames are attached to Reina's skeleton by synthorg bone anchors.  When the limbs are in their fully-assembled state, the break-lines between the organic and synthetic skin are sealed with an organic polymer gel which prevents infections and related complications.  The knees contain compact servo-motors, however they are low-speed, high-torque motors which only engage when exceptional application of force-over-time is required.

The arms each contain a utility module located along the back of the forearm.  This module can contain a variety of backup/emergency equipment- typically either a retractable blade or a miniature mass accelerator (in Reina's case, both modules contain retractable blades by default).  The legs possess an exaggerated curve compared to natural human legs.  Their internal structure allows for the shins to have a very slight degree of flexibility, allowing for incredible speed and the ability to exert or absorb huge amounts of force.

I just think it works well for the character.  I've tried to give her a very sleek (almost cat-like) physique befitting a stealthy, agile, and acrobatic fighter, and I felt that larger/more defined breasts would disrupt that sleekness.

oh...
(rambling tangential thoughts)
flat girls do happen, so it reflects reality.
(other)
in my experience though, not meeting a standard body image: means you suffer as an outcast.
Men who have thin limbs, suffer constant rejection (employment, romantic, etc.) for not being "manly" enough.
Regardless, of that individuals strength, endurance, and agility.
(other)
having an -A cup is not always due to genes or hormones. it can be starvation or extreme physical discipline.
One can look at any number of olympic gymnasts, medal winning swimmers, and national treasure ballerinas.
(other)
Regardless, in today's "gender confused culture" the character seems to be sexless.
Curves don't hurt, breasts are just physiological labels that say, "I am female".
Males are stimulated by what  they see. So are females, though our culture tries to deny it.
(Personal)
I was that thin gangly guy, ignored because I was too thin. I worked fuels in the military and as a civilian in the field of fuel technology.
Everyday, I assembled pipes, pumps, and electrical systems that weighed many times my own weight.
almost 100 times a day, everyday, I carried/pulled 8 inch hard hose (full of fuel) out to its full length of 120 meters at track speeds. and using a hand crank, spooled those lines back up.
but I am rejected everyday, and one day I got lucky - found someone who loved me for me - only after, I had turned 35.
Everyday though, I still get those "Repulsed" stares. A life of never being good enough, because I am too thin.
(self-incrimination)
even as I am what others call ugly; I still needed human contact, I still needed intimacy, and I am grievously wounded by every rejection.
yet...
here I am. a hypocrite, "demanding women meet a standard"...

I hate being me. I hate me.

Removing the limbs may be a viable method for KAIROS neutralization and subsequent imprisonment.

Her prosthesis attached above the elbow and knee joints respectively.

Wow the musculature is well represented (mostly on the arm). It reminds me of Raiden's cyborg body in MGS Revengeance.
I must admit the iteration deprived of almost all the cybernetics (far right) kinda creeped me out a little. It made me realize how badly they mutilated Reina and the other subjects of project Kairos. The endo-structure looks and feels believable to the point where if this level of prosthetic technology were available today and I were to suffer a lost limb I would want these cyber-limbs attached to my body (even though it looks painful to graft those onto you). Overall wonderfully rendered, love the color palette chosen for the cyber components (makes the muscles look fleshy).

So then...
What are the four bolts or plugs on her abdomen for?
Does she have any type of dermal or subdermal armor?
Are her natural skeletal and muscular tissues genetically or biologically enhanced to deal with stress from the cybernetic strength?

Tekka-Croe In reply to Vennicerunnos [2016-06-05 23:33:55 +0000 UTC]

>What are the four bolts or plugs on her abdomen for?

The plugs embedded throughout her body are multi-purpose sockets.  The outer section of the plug is used for data transfer between her body and external systems.  If she has ample prep-time prior to a mission, she can connect the sockets to a series of corresponding plugs in her armor's bodysuit, fully integrating the suit with her nervous system.  The central recessed section of the socket can be used to inject medical agents directly into the bloodstream.

>Does she have any type of dermal or subdermal armor?

This isn't something that had occurred me previously.  It would make sense to have some kind of semi-organic mesh beneath the skin to further enhance durability, so I may add something like that to her specs.

>Are her natural skeletal and muscular tissues genetically or biologically enhanced to deal with stress from the cybernetic strength?

The short answer is yes.  For further elaboration, I'm copy-pasting a couple of my responses from the animated version of these illustrations:

The bone-anchors themselves are not precisely the same material as organic bone, but can be grafted onto it.  The grafting process in this case used a "toothed" pattern where the anchors meet the natural skeleton, meaning that the graft runs along both horizontal and vertical planes, improving its strength.  The natural skeleton has also undergone gradual chemical augmentation to increase its density and toughness far beyond normal limitations.  Additionally, the anchor-points for the synthetic muscle structure are spread out over a relatively large surface area on each limb, distributing stress and further reducing the strain felt by the core joint.

Through a combination of genetic engineering and long-term chemical augmentation, her organic musculature is extremely dense.  Her strength and speed are further enhanced by thin ribbons of artificially cultivated synthorg muscle strategically grafted into her natural musculature.

It should be noted that in the case of a normal human, what you bring up absolutely would be an issue, and the weakest link likely would be where the bone-anchor is grafted to the skeleton.  The KAIROS, such as Reina, were engineered specifically to undergo this kind of extensive augmentation.

Thanks for clearing that up
btw we have subdermal armor tech nowadays... sort of... its a little volatile because the material they're working with right now would turn your body into a superconducting can of beans. a static shock could electrocute you.

I'm sure that'll be fixed in the future though

Man, what ticks me off is that we have these awesome looking cybernetic concepts in science fiction media but in real life we have yet to attempt to replicate these awesome looking applications into actual practical usage.

"Hey Bio-mechanical engineers we have a design that utilizes the human body's actual anatomy by restructuring everything to function like a skeleton and muscles, just artificial and longer lasting!"

Engineers: " Nah, we are gonna stick with hydraulic cylinders."

"You fucking WHAT MATE?!"

as someone heading into the biomedical engineering field, EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING. (also, i have a mighty distaste for the heresy that is the rotating wrist mount... THING, that elbow-forward prosthesis designers keep doing, it ruins so much of the dextrious motions and irks me to no end)
Tekka and a few other artists have actually been acting as a bit of inspiration for the external bits of a set of integrated synthetic replacements i've been putting together data for.
The human form is a clever bit of engineering on its own, so copying the structures is one of the next best steps, easily! Most of the hurdles lie in finding the best ways to mount synthetics TO the organics, stable enough connections to bone that would withstand high shock loads, etc.
Hoping that soon, the idea of biomimicry will catch on with the wider field, but i promise there's a few of us working on it!
