Description
In my mad rush to procrastinate getting ready for A-Kon, I threw together this tutorial on coloring eyes. This isn't geared towards any particular coloring method, and you can use this as a guide for digital and traditional coloring. There's a preview up because the file itself is about 350K, so be warned if you're on a slow modem. I couldn't save it any smaller and have the text still be readable amongst the compression artifacts.
Don't take this as a YOU MUST COLOR EYES THIS WAY because there's tons of ways to do it. This is just one method for getting good results, along with a number of different variations in reflections that you can try.

Nice. Very helpful . I've been drawing for a long while, but sometimes I feel the need to refresh my memory on basic "anatomy" principles ^^. Reading through your eye shading tutorial really made me recall some stuff and think about the small details.

oooh! spiffy tutorial! hey....*puts on puppy dog eyes* can you make a tutorial about hands and feet? or reccomend someplace with them? drawing hands and feet drive me up the wall (i'm always twisting my hands around trying to get the right angles and stuff - insane) it would be much appreciated. >^.^<

Heehee - I'm not that good at hands - I had to use some serious reference for these pictures. The best tip I've got is to learn the bones of the hand and when you draw it, do the bones first lightly (just a stick line is OK) with little circles for the joints, then wrap teh flesh around it after you've got teh underlying structure in. And keep in mind that in most poses, especially with bent fingers, each little segment of the finger is pointing in a different direction, and fingers are rarely exactly parallel to each other.
Feet are a bit easier, since the toes don't move that independently of each other. The closest I have is a quick draw-over I did for someone else to work out the perspective of a pair of feet. The best tip I ever got from my drawing teacher is to note where the leg bone hits the ankle: see how the heel bone comprises like a full third of the foot? The heel sticks out much farther than most people realize, which it's got to because of balance issues. If you vizualize the foot as a right triangle, with the right angle corner where the leg bone hits it, you can get it balanced out pretty good.
Toes: much easier than anyone thinks. Firs toff - they don't have to be elaborate, and you don't *want* them elaborate, like you don't want ears elaborate, because they're not the focus of the picture (exceptions here and here ). So you just do what Hiroaki Samura does in Blade of the Imortal and draw little squiggles, thene veryone leaves compliments on your page telling you how good your toes are. XD

XD Well, it goes a long way towards explaining why people often look gobsmacked in photos.

Wow. I think you're officially my hero.
You just explained the anatomy of the eye for me. I now have... about a bajillion times as much knowledge on the topic of eyes...
Ok, that's probably not true, but then again, knowledge isn't exactly quantitative...
And bajillion's not a word...
So I guess my previous statement could really mean anything... Whateva'

Thanks! XD I didn't know about how reflection worked inside the eye until an art teacher told me two years ago. It was one of those O.o moments because it's something so simple and obvious yet not simple and obvious. And it changes depending on the lighting in the scene as well, but I'm not especially a master of anything but one-light-source images. XD

Yeah, that really impressed me. I kinda freaked out when I realized what you we saying and forced my brother to admire the diagram as well ^_^; Anyways, yeah, I'm gonna be payin' more attention to eyes now. I can finally appreciate their shininess.

I am the Queen of Procrastination, and I can get an amazing amount of work accomplished, provided there's something else I'm avoiding. I've made great inroads on the squalor that is my apartment this weekend, and got this tutorial done. I shall probably find a cure for cancer before Thursday. XD
