Gaara x ReaderChapter 2: The Exams Begin
--
You walked into the building with Kane and Yui. Inside, many ninja sat together in groups of six. You looked around—it was pretty big inside. There were only 6 seats left open…Perfect. You didn’t see the Suna ninja who you were teamed with anywhere. You walked over to the front of the room, where the open seats were, and jumped over the back of a char, landing on it, sitting perfectly. People stared at you from the sound of the chair thumping when you landed on it.
Oh, how you just loved to make a scene.
….But not as much as Kane, that’s for sure…
He stepped on the first table that he saw, pulling himself up, to stand on it.
“Hey! Get down!” someone shouted. A few people turned to stare at him. You looked at him, annoyed. ‘Are you kidding me? He’s planning to do that isn’t he? Poor Yui…’ you thought.
Kane looked down at Yui and smiled. She started giggling and nodded. She climbed up onto the desk along with him. She stood on her tiptoes and reached toward his shoulders. She grabbed on, and in an instant, pulled herself up, until she was sitting on his shoulders. She formed a few hand signs, and in a second, a pair of small, fairy-like-wings appeared on her back. Not even she, herself, understands where she learned to do this, or how. People say it must be a kekkei genkai—but what chakra types mixed would make wings? She slid off of his shoulders. She wrapped her arms around him, and began to fly up into the air.
The ceiling went far—very high up. She continued to fly until they were only a few feet from the ceiling, and straight above seat he was going to sit in. Soon enough, everybody was staring, and running at least 5 feet away from the seats. Except you, that is. You figured, they have been doing that all the time, and you could just block with your scythe if you needed to, even though Kane would probably die if you did.
You watched as Kane locked his knees straight, and spread his arms out to the sides, grinning all the while. “Are you ready?” Yui asked, while giggling.
“Mhm,” was Kane’s short response, along with a curt nod. Yui smiled, and dropped him. As he started to fall, many people began to scream, thinking he would die. As he fell, he did many different flips and twists. Yui watched from up in the air. As Kane neared the ground, he did the best he could to move to a standing position. And, it worked. He landed on his feet on the chair. He, himself, was surprised it worked, and that the chair didn’t break.
Yui clapped from up above, and then she flew down at high speed, landing in a sitting position on the table. A few people started clapping. Their team was known well for showing off so freaking much. Of course, you don’t do as much as Kane and Yui do. And Yui is usually just assisting in whatever Kane is planning.
Yui dropped her jutsu, and her wings vanished. You thought they suited her well. They were light pink and looked really glittery. She looked like a real fairy, with her lavender hair, purple eyes, pale skin, short hair, baby tees, long skirts… It fit her perfectly.
You looked at Yui. “You use your wings way too much. You’re like a fairy… That’s what I’m gonna call you now! Fairy! You’re the Fairy Princess,” you said, smirking.
Yui giggled. “Go ahead, I love fairies!” she said, grinning cutely. She really did look like a fairy—a little, child fairy. She may be 16, but she looks like an 8 year old.
You raised both your eyebrows and chuckled.
You heard footsteps beside you, and three ‘thump’ sounds. You turned to check, and saw none other than the Suna team. “Yo,” you said, looking at the red-head next to you.
The boy looked at you. He smiled so slightly, you couldn’t tell if he really was smiling at all. “Hello,” Gaara said. You tilted your head, and grinned so wide your eyes were squinting.
Gaara held back a blush, and his smile grew wide enough for you to see it was really there. ‘His smile is cute… Wait, what? No, this guy is mean, I don’t like him… Crap.’ you thought.
A man started speaking, and you turned your head forward. Yui jumped off the table, and landed into her seat. Papers were past around and the test began. The man’s name was Ibiki. He explained that if you got caught cheating more than 5 times you would be kicked out of the exams, along with the other five people on your team. And if you failed, the same result.
The three questions were easy, but the fourth seemed impossible. You looked around. You realized Gaara was using a third-eye made of sand. He finished the test and dropped the eye. You saw Hinata using her Byakugan, and Sasuke using his Sharingan.
‘I get it now… This isn’t a normal test… We have to cheat,’ you thought. You tried to think of a way to see other people’s answers without getting caught, but you had nothing.
Gaara looked over to you and saw you were struggling. He decided he should help. Without anybody noticing, he let a bit of sand pour out on to the table, right between you two. He wrote the rest of the answers in the sand, and then tapped your shoulder.
You looked at him. He was looking downward… You followed his gaze, and landed on the sand. You read the writing—it said the answers to 4-9. ‘Perfect!’ you thought. You smiled at him, thankfully.
He smiled back, just slightly. You wrote down all the answers. Once you finished, Gaara let his sand slip back into his gourd.
You waited silently for a couple minutes.
Ibiki began to speak once more. “There is one more question for the test. If you get it wrong, you can not come back to the exams. If you get it right, you pass. You have the choice to drop out of the exams, or you can stay. Last chance.”
People started leaving, team after team. Naruto slowly stood up, and started screaming at Ibiki about how he will never leave.
You looked around at Yui, Kane, and the Suna team. None of them had any doubtful looks. Neither did you—you knew you’d be able to pass it. You sat up straight and stared confidently at Ibiki.
After a couple minutes of staring, and a few more teams leaving, Ibiki began to speak once more.
“…Anybody else?” he asked, looking around. “No one? Alright, then…You all pass,” he said.
Your eyes widened. Really? Passed? What was the question? Your thoughts were interrupted by a loud crash, and a woman flying through a window. Everybody stared—what the hell was that?
The woman who jumped in turned to face everyone in the room, aside from Ibiki.
“Hey! I’ll be taking you from here, for the second part of the Chunin exams!” the woman said, grinning. “My name is Anko!”
Ibiki growled at her as she took all the young ninja away. “I wasn’t exactly finished…” he whispered to himself as he went to pick up all the tests. He laughed to himself when he saw Naruto’s paper. “I can’t believe I passed somebody who didn’t get one single answer…” he thought out loud. He made his way to where you were sitting, and saw a little bit of sand sitting on the table… He stared at it confused as he picked up the papers. “Sand, huh? I wonder where that came from,” he said, brushing it off of the table.
You walked along with Anko and all of the other ninja. You noticed Gaara was standing strangely close to you—so close, you were almost touching. You blushed slightly. You looked out of the corner of your eye at Gaara. You brushed it off and looked back ahead of you.
Anko stopped walking as you reached a fence with a lot of gates—behind it was a forest. Anko explained that it was the ‘Forest of Death’, and the rules for this round. She made everybody sign a consent form in the case of death, so it will not be her responsibility… ‘Well, ain’t that cruel…’ you thought.
Anko explained that there were 44 gates surrounding the forest. She told everybody to pick their entrance. One scroll was passed out to every team. Each team needed both scrolls—heaven and earth—to finish. They had 5 days in the forest to get the other scroll and get to a tower located in the center of the forest. You were told that if anybody from your team is unable to continue, you are disqualified from the exams.
Everybody turned in their signed consent forms, some forcing themselves to, and entered the ‘Forest of Death’. As soon as your team had a scroll, you all ran off.
You were running through the trees, when the branch you stepped on broke. “Wha~!” you screamed, as you unexpectedly were dropped as the branch snapped. Gaara, who was right behind you, immediately stopped. His sand shot out of his gourd, catching you before you fell out of reach.
You looked down, wondering what had caught you. “…Sand?” you whispered to yourself, picking up a few grains of sand between your index finger and thumb, then letting it fall back down. You looked back up to where you had fallen from, and saw Gaara. His eyes were widened slightly, and he looked like he was breathing a little heavier than usual. You stared up, a little confused, not knowing what exactly had just happened.
You saw Yui, Kane, Temari, and Kankuro appear on the branch that Gaara was standing on. Yui looked at Gaara, wondering why he wasn’t raising the sand. He looked tired—he was sweating, and breathing heavy. Why was he so tire already? Yui didn’t know. Maybe he wasted chakra before the exams, and it hasn’t restored yet. She didn’t really care at the moment, she just wanted to get you back up.
Yui performed some hand seals as he jumped off the branch. You looked at her scared, until you realized the hand seals she was performing. Temari and Kankuro stared at her. “Are you crazy, what are you doing?!” Temari shouted. Yui ignored her. Wings appeared on her back, and she flew down towards you. She picked you up, and Gaara let the sand flow back into his gourd.
“Thanks,” you said, smiling. Yui smiled back, and nodded. She flew back up, and landed on a branch just before the one everybody else was on.
Temari and Kankuro stared with shock apparent on their faces as Yui dropped the jutsu. Gaara looked at her, but hid the fact that he really was extremely surprised.
“Fairy…” you whispered, smirking at Yui. Yui just smiled, giggled, and gave you a peace sign. You rolled your eyes, and continued on your run. Everybody followed.
As you ran, it got darker, and it got later. You didn’t find one single person in the entire day. You climbed down a tree and jumped to the ground. You looked around. Nobody in sight.
Everybody jumped down from the tree as well.
“Why are we stopping?” Kane asked, looking around.
You looked at him. “Let’s rest for the night. We need to get some rest, or we won’t be able to fight, or even get far enough to find somebody else to get the other scroll,” you said. You unbuckled the strap on your back and threw it on the ground. Kane sighed as he and Yui did the same.
All three of you got a bag from your team leader, Tachibana, Yuki.
They are all pretty weird… All of them are black. Yours has two straps, one wraps over your shoulder, down to your waist, while the other wraps completely around your waist, connecting to the other strap.
Yui’s wraps around her waist alone—surprisingly, never falls off.
And Kane’s wraps around his neck… You always believed it would choke him one day. Why would he have a bag like that? You always wondered.
You took your scythe off of your back and leaned it against a tree. You sat on the ground, leaning against the same tree as your weapon. You crossed your arms. You knew right away that Yui and Kane would be leaving you to watch over them in their sleep. You usually didn’t need much sleep. But they didn’t know you haven’t slept in a few days.. But, it doesn’t matter, because even when you are asleep, you are great at sensing people’s presences. So if anybody is coming toward you, you’d wake up. They always thought that was one creepy skill you had… But hey, it was helpful!
Yui dropped her sword on the ground by her bag, sat next to them, and opened her bag. She pulled out a… pillow? She dropped it on the ground and laid her head on it, shoving her bag aside.
You stared at Yui. “Really? You brought a pillow?” you said, annoyed. Yui just grinned and gave the usual peace sign as she closed her eyes to sleep. You sighed, and moved on.
Kane sat next to his bag, dropping his hidden daggers from his sleeves, letting them fall into his bag. He pulled out the two daggers he kept on his belt and set one in his bag. He stabbed the other into the ground. He closed his bag, and laid down, using it as a pillow as he closed his eyes, quickly drifting off to sleep.
You sighed and looked up at the sky. It was almost pitch black—though you could barely tell through all the leaves. The darkness surrounding you gave you a bit of a hint, though.
Kankuro put his puppet that he always kept on his back against a tree, then leaned against it, sleeping instantly. Temari did the same, putting her giant fan against a tree, and drifted off right away.
You brought your eyes from the sky, looking over to where two of the three Suna siblings were sleeping. ‘Oh, great, am I going to have to watch their team too?’ you thought, really annoyed, to yourself.
You looked around. You saw Gaara sitting against a tree, with his gourd next to him. He didn’t look like he was going to sleep any time soon.
“Hey, aren’t you going to sleep?” you asked Gaara. Though you were kind of hoping he would stay up and keep look out for his own team, you didn’t want him to be too tired tomorrow. He already seemed exhausted today.
Gaara looked at you. At first, he was glaring… But it only lasted a few seconds, it quickly vanished. He shook his head. “I am staying up to keep watch. You should sleep or you’ll be too tired tomorrow,” he said.
You shook your head as well. “I’ll be able to stay awake for a while, I don’t sleep much,” you replied, “You should go to sleep.”
“Humph. Well, then I guess neither of us are going to sleep then,” Gaara said, smirking slightly as he turned his head to look straight ahead.
“Well then…” you said grabbing your scythe and bag as you stood up. You walked over by Gaara and dropped your things. “Let’s talk, to pass time,” you said as you sat next to him, leaning against the same tree. The trunk was thick, so you leaned against the same side as he was. You were so close that your shoulders were touching.
Gaara’s eyes slightly widened, and his cheeks tinted pink, but neither were really noticeable.
“Um… Why didn’t you go to sleep instead?” you asked, turning your head slightly towards the boy at your side.
“Just not tired,” he said.
“…You seemed exhausted earlier. You were breathing heavy and sweating a lot, I thought you were tired from running a lot,” you replied, a little confused. If he wasn’t tired, why was he like that?
“I don’t know…” he lied. He was actually scared because you fell, but he wouldn’t tell you that.
You shrugged. “Whatever,” you said.
An hour passed, nobody said anything. It was kind of awkward. You decided you should say something and break the silence. “U-Um!” you started loudly.
Gaara jumped a little from the sudden shout. You wouldn’t notice if you were watching, but since you were still sitting against him, you could feel him move.
“…D-Did you know… Um… Recently, there have been a lot of … Um… Robbery, stealing babies, and manslaughter?!” you said loudly and awkwardly. You wondered why you said that. Where did you get that from? You remembered… Kane said that randomly, once. Damn him…
Gaara turned his head and looked at you strangely. He smirked. “Oh really now?” he said. This time, his smirk was very obvious and visible.
“Hehehe—uh, yeah…” you said, trying to think of something else to say. You your head to him and gave him an awkward look, with an obviously fake smile. “A-and rape!” you said, again, quite loudly—you were surprised nobody was waking up. You had no idea why you said that. Even though, recently, that has really been happening… It’s a sad, sad world, you know?
Gaara stared at you, with his eyes obviously wider than usual, still smirking. “…Is that so?” he said, squinting his eyes a tiny bit more than usual.
“…Hehe… heh…?” You looked at him awkwardly.
Gaara’s smirk grew… and before you knew it, he tackled you. He pinned you down, sitting on you, holding your arms down so you couldn’t get up. Your face turned bright red… What was he doing?!
“Wha—“ you started, but were interrupted.
“…Rape, huh?” Gaara said. He lowered his head, until you were only an inch way.
You were a little bit scared… But mostly, you were more on the confused side. What was happening? “Uh—Um!! W-what are you…” you stuttered. You tried to get up, but he kept a tight grip on your wrists, holding you down. ‘Damn it, what’s going on?!’ you thought.
Gaara lowered his head a little more until he was pressing his lips to yours. Your eyes widened… You had no idea what was happening. You tried to get up one more time, but it was useless, you were stuck. Under Gaara. Why was he on top of you?! You didn’t know why, but really… You didn’t care anymore.
You stopped struggling to get free. You slowly closed your eyes and kissed him back. You stayed like that for a couple minutes. You didn’t realize how long you’d held your breath, until Gaara separated his lips from yours, and you instantly started breathing heavy. You opened your eyes and looked at Gaara… Your face was still red—though not as much—and his cheeks were tinted pink.
Gaara let go of your wrists and rolled off of you. He sat back against the tree. You sat up. You could feel your heart beating… Did that really just happen?
You were too locked up in your own thoughts to realize Gaara was staring at you—and actually smiling! But you snapped back to reality when you felt something grab your wrist. You jumped and turned your head… It was Gaara. He pulled you toward him. You sat against the tree. You sat the same way as before… You were sitting right next to him.
It was silent for a couple minutes, and very awkward… Though it was still very awkward, maybe even more than it was before, it wasn’t as quiet… When you yawned. Gaara turned to look at you. Your eyes were barely open, and your head was tilted. You looked like you were going to pass out right then and there.
“You can go to sleep if you want…” Gaara said.
You tried to sit up straight, and open your eyes wider. “N-No… It’s fine,” you said, as you yawned once again. But… Your actions didn’t really match your words. Before you knew it, you were leaning on Gaara, asleep.
Gaara smiled slightly as he watched you sleep… ‘I think I really do like this girl…’ he thought. ‘…She’s mine, now… Nobody can have her… Except me…’
It started to get a little light out in the sky. Gaara guessed it would be fine if he slept for a bit, since everybody would be waking soon anyway.
Gaara turned a bit towards you, and grabbed your shoulders. He didn’t want to just drop you on the ground. He lightly pushed you off of him, and turned so he was completely facing you. ‘Good, she’s still asleep…’ he thought. He slowly laid down, not letting go of your shoulders. He pulled you down with him. He laid you right next to him. He pulled you close to him, and hugged you. He fell asleep holding you.
You and Gaara stayed like that the whole time you slept.
About an hour after Gaara had fallen asleep, Kankuro woke up. He yawned and looked around. “Guess I’m the only one awake…” he said, rubbing his eyes. When he stopped looking around, his eyes landed on you and Gaara. “What. The. Fuck. Is. That?” he said as his eyes widened more than ever. Kankuro stared, surprised that you weren’t dead from being so close to Gaara… and the fact Gaara was actually hugging you.
Kankuro crawled over and woke Temari up. Temari growled as she woke up. “What do you want…?” she said as she yawned and rubbed her eyes.
Kankuro pointed over to you and Gaara. “Gaara… and… Girl… and… Sleep… and… She’s not dead!!” he said, rather loudly—more like he screamed it. Temari opened her eyes and followed to where Kankuro was pointing. Her eyes widened so much. “Holy crap!!!” she shouted, even louder than Kankuro was.
And with that, everybody started to wake up. First was Yui, then Kane. Kankuro and Temari quickly pretended to sleep, and Temari whispered to them, “Sleep! Quick! Shh!” And so, Yui and Kane pretended to be asleep as well.
You and Gaara woke up last, at the same time.
You both sat up. You looked around… You could have sworn you heard voices. You looked around—but nobody was awake. You rubbed your eyes. Once you could see perfectly fine, you realized something… They were all awake. They were faking.
Gaara looked around. “I thought I heard Temari’s voice…” he said, stopping on her.
You sighed and shook your head. “Yeah—they’re all fake sleeping. Your siblings and my team,” you said quietly to Gaara.
Gaara stood up and walked over to Temari. He crouched down and looked at her carefully. “How can you tell?” he asked.
You stood up and crossed your arms. “Humph. 10 years of fake sleeping whenever my mom walked into my room. And also—Kane always fake sleeps when we are supposed to go on lame missions. He’s pretty good at it, but I already can tell whenever people fake now,” you said, laughing.
“Okay then…” Gaara said. He reached his arm out to wake up Temari from her fake sleep, but you ran over and grabbed his arm. He looked at you confused. You dragged him away. “H-hey… What are you doing?” he said as you—literally—dragged him across the ground.
You finally leg him go once you reached the tree you were by before. Everybody was still fake sleeping. You pulled out a water bottle. “…Did you bring any?” you asked, holding out a water bottle.
Gaara nodded.
“…Have any extra ones?” you asked, still holding out the bottle.
Gaara nodded, again. He pulled out a water bottle, though, you had no idea where from. It happened in he blink of an eye, like it just appeared. “Magic…” you whispered to yourself with a look of awe.
“…Huh?” Gaara questioned, tilting his head.
“U-uh, nothing.” you said. “Anyway…” you continued. “Want to see how I wake people up?” you said, which an evil look on your face.
Gaara’s eyes widened slightly. “…Sure?” he said, standing up. He was quite curious of what you were going to do.
You grinned evilly and stood up. You ran over to Kane, and knelt in front of him. Gaara followed behind and crouched down next to you.
You smiled. “Sorry, Kane…” you whispered you yourself. You opened the water bottle and plugged his nose. He opened his eyes when you plugged his nose because he couldn’t breathe. “Wake up, bastard!” you shouted, pretending you didn’t notice he was awake with eyes wide open, and dumped half of the water on his head.
You pulled your hand away. “Shit!!” Kane screamed, jumping up. Yui opened one eye and looked over at Kane. She saw he was drenched in water… She instantly knew what would happen if she didn’t get up.
You giggled at the panicking Kane in front of you and stood up. You turned to go wake Yui from her false slumber. “Next—“ you began.
You stopped when you saw Yui already standing, holding her unsheathed sword up, ready in her attack stance. “Don’t come near me with that!” she shouted, breathing heavily. She obviously was not ready to wake up, but being awake is better than being awake and drenched in water. “Dump it, or drink it, I don’t care, get rid of that water!” she shouted.
You laughed. “Okay, okay.” You turned to Gaara, who was now standing next to you. “Can I pour this on you?” you said jokingly, holding the water out toward him.
“No,” came his simple response.
You made a fake pouty face. “Fine,” you said, and poured the water on yourself. “I was feeling hot, anyway,” you said giggling. You turned over to Kankuro and Temari. “Now… Hey, they fell asleep!” you said, staring at the Suna ninja. “…They fell asleep while they were faking.” You smiled. “Then they can’t stop this,” you said, grabbing Gaara’s hand and dragging him over toward where Kankuro and Temari were. “Okay… Do it. Pour,” you said, smiling.
Gaara stared at you. “…What? Pour the water on them?”
You nodded. “Yeah.” He shrugged and opened the bottle. He held it over Temari’s head and began to tilt it, but you stopped him before it spilled. He looked at you confused. You told him to pour it, now you are telling him to stop, and he didn’t know why.
“Like this,” you said, kneeling down between the two siblings who were sleeping against two trees. “…Plug their noses first, it wakes them up, and when you pour the water on them, they stay awake. It is funnier that way. Just pretend you didn’t know they woke up when I plug their noses, then pour the water, okay?” you explained, holding out both hands toward the ninja’s faces.
“Okay…” Gaara said, slightly tilting the bottle over Temari’s head.
“Go!” you shouted as you plugged both Temari and Kankuro’s noses. Both of their eyes shot open, and Gaara started pouring the water on Temari’s head. He went back and forth from Kankuro and Temari until the bottle was empty. He didn’t stop pouring for a second, but he was careful to make sure it didn’t spill on you.
Once the bottle was empty, you let them breathe, and stood up. Gaara dropped the bottle on the ground to catch you as you jumped back into him, dodging a punch from Kankuro. Gaara’s smile was obvious. You were laughing loudly, smiling wide like an idiot. Kane and Yui were laughing in the background; they loved seeing you do it to someone other than them. Especially when they didn’t like that someone.
Temari and Kankuro stood up. They looked at how Gaara was smiling and still holding you. Temari said to Kankuro, “Look, Kankuro. Hell has frozen over.”
It took you a while to realize you were leaning back onto Gaara. Once you noticed, you quickly stood up. “U-Uh, sorry!” you shouted. Your face was tinted pink. You turned around and looked at Gaara. He had a small smile on his face. You were shocked. You never really saw him smile. “Hell… Has frozen, indeed,” you whispered to yourself, remembering what Temari told Kankuro.
You brushed that off to the side. “Um, we should probably get searching for the other scroll, now,” you said.
Gaara gave you a curt nod. He turned around and walked over to his gourd. He picked it up and put it on his back. You did the same with your scythe and bag.
Kane pulled out his dagger from the ground and put it on his belt. He opened his bag and pulled out 3 daggers. He put one in his belt and two in his sleeves. He closed his bag and clipped it around his neck as always.
Yui grabbed the small pillow she dragged along and tossed it into her bag. She closed the bag and clipped it around her waist. She grabbed her sword, which she had dropped as soon as you poured the water on yourself instead of pouring it on her, and sheathed it. She put it on her back.
Kankuro put his puppet on his back, and Temari grabbed her fan. “Can’t we wait until this water dries?” Temari growled, looking down at herself. She was still drenched.
You looked at the blonde girl. “The water was to keep you awake so we could get moving soon as possible. You’re awake, we can go now. It’ll dry faster when you run, so let’s go,” you said, turning away.
Temari sighed and put her fan on her back. “Whatever.”
You focused your chakra in your feet and ran up a tree. You stopped when you made it to a branch. You looked down and waited for everyone. Once they all got up onto branches, you began to run and search for people with the other scroll.
