Based on what would happen if Bulma did get her original wish.XD
She wanted her true love I think.
He'd probably WTF for a while and if he realized what the Dragonballs did he'd stick around for another year terrorizing the general public.
In the end he'd destroy the planet.

Timeline wise this would be right at the start if Pilaf and various other characters didn't exist.

She wanted "the perfect boyfriend" though I imagine with making such a wish your wording is very important to getting what you want. You may want the perfect boyfriend, but ask for "true love" thinking they are the same thing. They clearly aren't, haha.

Its also translated as "Hot boyfriend", we saw Bulma was pretty fickle and not all in interested in a truely serious relationship at that point

Well yeah, what she wanted was obviously fickle.
How she may have worded it to the dragon is a completely different story.
As far as she thinks, IMO, a "hot boyfriend" or "perfect boyfriend" is basically her true love. Let's face it, if she were looking for less would she really need to go collect the dragonballs? She's after forever, but her only requirement so far is that he's gotta be hot-damn-diggity, because like you said she's pretty shallow at this point. So if she asked for her true love, man she would be in for a surprise.
It's like if you wished to be married to someone. That would happen, but you didn't cover what you may have really wanted, like an actual loving relationship. Your husband/wife may cheat on you constantly or divorce you right away, ya know?
Or in this case, blow up the planet.
Not that I believe in "true loves" in da real world, but what's canon is canon.

As she wasn't wishing for true love, its more likely she would've just gotten a random hot guy that fit her desires at the time.
The real life reason for that hookup was to create Trunks as you can probably guess.

Author intent =/= Character's motivation
I don't get why you need to emphasize that she probably would not have worded her wish that way. This scenario also relies on her never meeting Yamcha, Oolong, Pilaf, etc. Those are way bigger divergences from canon that her wording her wish to ask for her "true love"
She could have also said "give me the perfect man" "give me the perfect boyfriend" "give me the best man for me" etc with many different possible results. Hell, there are probably scenarios where she gets Goku, or like Mr. Satan or something haha.
We'll never know, because she never did directly give her wish to the dragon balls.

I'm a fan of that whole "be careful what you wish for" concept, like if Vegeta got immortality on Namek and basically was miserable and alone for the rest of his existence. Or if Krillin tricked him and made Gohan immortal instead, etc etc.
Lot's of possibilities with dragon balls go unexplored because the resulting plot isn't ideal for ~romance~ and that's what 90% of fanfic writers want.

Remember, it was Yamcha that wanted to get married.
In Real Life, Toriyama said of the humans, Krillin was the only one to get married because even though he couldn't make a saiyan, he was his favorite.

I dunno, with dbz the entire story isn't really focused on romance. There are only so many female characters (let's not pretend Toriyama woulda got away with a homo relationship) and frankly it's almost better to leave these things open ended rather than "pair the spares" like so many shows do. (Martha/Mickey from Doctor Who comes to mind)
Maybe Yamcha is married. He mentions having a girlfriend after the Cell saga. Maybe Launch managed to track down Tien Shinhan and get her man. Maybe 17 got himself a girlfriend. Neither Trunks nor Goten are ever shown getting girlfriends (GT notwithstanding) The show can't address every character's ending, and it shouldn't have to, ya know?

Yeah I'm aware of Toriyama's issues writting romance and designing female characters, but how hard would it be for him to do a quick panel where his wife shows up or is mentioned. Or do a filler.
The latest interview with Toriyama implies none of that happened. And I'm not sure Yamcha even mentioned anyone in the original manga.
Though Toriyama does do a controversial attempt at giving Trunks a girlfriend(Because he's a saiyan) in the newest movie.

Well, he does mention having a girlfriend shortly after the Cell saga, but for realsies none of this really matters to me, haha. I don't quite have the Yamcha boner you do.
When you have 8 gazillion characters like Dragonball, some fall to the wayside. Goku's the main character, and always has been. So issues dealing with him and his family take the forefront. Even the Vegeta/Bulma family began experiencing character decay at the end of the series. Think about it, the next generation of fighters implied by the ending was Uub, Pan, and Goku as their master. (GT once again ignored)
I dunno what to say. Get over it? The series is almost 20 years old, haha, there's not really any chance for significant changes now. Maybe you'll get lucky and Yamcha will get a girlfriend in the live action movies.

I am aware that the series is over, but its still extremely sloppy character writing. The Japanese voice actors like Toru Furuya have expressed the same belief.
Though Toriyama getting on in the years and rushing the series at that point does explain it to an extent. In Interviews with and Conventions, he'll often forget important characters and details about the series.
