Description Thanks to *Skioppy , I've somehow managed to get back on a serious Zarael kick. (THIS IS NO PROBLEM FOR ME, since they seem to happen every now and then. ) Oh Zarael... I don't care that you're a magnificent bastard, I love you anyway.

I don't like him for being evil and trying to destroy the world... BUT HE LOOKS SO HOT... dammit... XDD
He looks gorgeous I wish he had a good twin... I would want a good version of Zarael all for myself

temiel In reply to Chenria [2010-05-17 21:01:51 +0000 UTC]

That's the problem, isn't it? XD

Part of the reason Farael's my favorite is because he's got all the good points and none of the evil. Plus, red hair and pointy ears!

Chenria In reply to temiel [2010-05-17 21:04:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh... to be honest I prefer blondes (but I like red hair, too :3) but so Zarael would be top favourite if he wasn't that evil... so it will always lead to a fight between Pirossa and Malachi... blond and evil *sigh*

But well yeah... Farael is of course always charming and gorgeous... maybe I should join his fangirls... but then... Pirossa and Malachi Your guys are just too hot *sigh* and I forgot about Dalton... he's so great, too...

temiel In reply to Chenria [2010-05-17 21:25:19 +0000 UTC]

Aww, I'm so glad you like all my guys! I'd say if you want a blonde, Pirossa's your best bet. Although I have to say... if you're not a human, Zarael's QUITE the gentleman. At least, that's what Trean discovered.

Haha, yeah, Pirossa is really tempting. But the others are, too. But from what I know about him Pirossa might be the least dangerous one... (besides Farael but he's taken and I don't want to mess with Rian XD)

He has... a lot of problems. He's definitely one of the more complicated characters (Trean and Farael are pretty complicated as well, must be in the blood ). =Lumaris actually asked earlier about some of Zarael's backstory and why he is the way he is, so if you're at all curious, this is that comment thread: [link]

I get a really huge kick out of examining his, um. Gears. Yeeeeees. That's it.

Is it weird that I was thinking just yesterday that I wanted to know more about this character? I looked through the Astral-Arcana group but couldn't find a bio on him >.> is he from that universe? Regardless, he is lovely looking, and I love how you illustrated him <3 the colors and border is just so brilliant, giving a classic look xD I like his pose too (hehe, who couldn't? xD)

Also, kind of off-topic, but I was wondering if I can join the group or if you wanted me to be a watcher instead xD;; I only now noticed I wasn't a member.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to Lumaris [2010-05-17 17:21:20 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Awesome. He is indeed from the same universe, but his part in it was over and done with before Astral Arcana proper (he's from Trean's dark and mysterious past back in 2007... ). He's got serious, SERIOUS baggage and a whooole plateful of issues. Anything specific you want to know about him? I could go on at length, because he's one of my secret favorites.

Oh, absolutely you can actually join! I assumed since you watched instead of joining you just wanted to stay a watcher, but you can go ahead and join if you'd rather.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lumaris In reply to temiel [2010-05-17 17:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that makes sense xD Well, I assumed he was Farael's father, but didn't want to jump to conclusions. There's just so much similarity (unless that's just coincidence xD), but I also thought I read about it in one of your other deviations. xD Is he somewhat of the villain type?

I'm totally joining I watched because I wasn't sure if it was open to members at that point or not xD I can't remember why I never asked, but I could've been busy with school...phoo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to Lumaris [2010-05-17 18:23:31 +0000 UTC]

He is indeed Farael's father, yes. No coincidence there. He and Trean had a really awesome but totally misbegotten relationship that started as him just using her, but he ended up falling in love with her in the end. (Aww...? ) If you don't mind reading artists' comments to get the general feel of what went down between him and Trean, the deviations with the most info are these: [link] [link] [link]

...And then there's this, which is like the crazy-epilogue. [link]

If you'd rather, I can condense the whole thing, but those artist comments generally say it better than I can rehash. Long story short, he's... SOMEWHAT of a villain type. When it comes to non-humans, he's genuinely good, helpful and philanthropic... but that really doesn't excuse the fact that he's a genocidal maniac where humans ARE concerned. >_<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lumaris In reply to temiel [2010-05-17 18:35:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow! I just read the descriptions, and now I have a better understanding for him. And Trean, poor girl >.< He really is a maniac, and I liked how you put it, "he and Trean shared a relationship that was deceptive in its seeming simplicity, but devastating in its actual complexity" - really well worded. xD And so he's not really dead, but kinda... almost feel bad for his suffering. D: But at the same time, he kinda had it coming...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to Lumaris [2010-05-17 18:49:37 +0000 UTC]

I know, I have incredibly mixed feelings about him, he's... really complicated. You know what's REALLY upsetting, is the fact that Trean and Orethiel (and eventually Anton) kept that secret for 300 years (she never even told Donovan what really happened), and Farael only found out once everyone thought Trean was dead that his father wasn't the heroic martyr everyone believes him to be. HERE KID, HAVE A CRAPTON OF ISSUES TO PILE ON TOP OF YOUR EXISTING ISSUES. If Fae hadn't been involved with Rian at the time, I think he would've taken it much, much worse.

The thing is, Zarael does have a reason for everything, so he's not what one can necessarily consider a total monster by nature, he sort of developed it by circumstance. I do feel very bad for him, but at the same time, he was far too dangerous to stick around, especially since he refused to repent for TRYING TO KILL EVERYONE.

Man, in-game this was TOTALLY devastating. Alan had me very well fooled, so it played out really well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lumaris In reply to temiel [2010-05-17 19:12:59 +0000 UTC]

Geez, poor Farael D: what a realization to come to. *pats him* Least he has Rian, indeed.

What was his reason for wanting the elimination of all humans? I can only guess he'd been led on some misconception, been betrayed, or something much more sinister to develop such hatred...

hehe, was Zarael an npc or did Alan play him as a character? I'm trying to learn how to play DnD too >.< I kinda signed up to play a D20 game at GenCon (on a stage in front of an audience no less - of course, it's a random pick so there's a chance I won't play, but still...) so I'm trying to learn the rules. I haven't been able to buy a game set yet to start with. Maybe you have some advice for beginners? I'm not sure how the game is actually played. I'm aware there's a GM that sets the rules and tells what happens, but how is it told and how do players "play" besides rolling the dice to see what damage they take/give? (perhaps I should have sent this question in note form xD feel free to reply in that way if it's easier and so it doesn't flood comments xD)

temiel In reply to Lumaris [2010-05-17 19:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Hm. I'll answer the stuff that's relevant to the character, but I'll give you mechanics in the note.

He... has a lot of issues, stemming from the fact he was born in a human-dominated theocracy, and his human mother was put to death by the priests when he was a child for consorting with a non-human and having him. They would have killed him as well, were he not smuggled out by her relatives. They raised him, but it was an arrangement born entirely out of family obligation to his mother, and the whole time they treated him very badly and like a lesser being. When he grew up, he tried to seek out his father's kin among the celestials and the fiends, but both sides assumed he was either a liar or a political tool because of his mixed ancestry, and he was rejected (sometimes violently) by all of them for being less than a full planar outsider (which is the general classification that both celestials and fiends fall into). As an adult, he was pulled through Shadow to this world, which was (of course) dominated by humans who throughout history had subjugated beings of Shadow and each other, and who he believed despoiled the planet they'd been given. So he's had a couple centuries at LEAST to nurse quite a hatred for both them AND himself for being tainted by his human blood. He knew eventually the veiling effect of Shadow would fall, and that when it did, humanity would panic and persecute Shadow beings, so at the same time he was eliminating what he considered a blight on the planet and protecting those he'd adopted as his own in the absence of anyone he could really call kin.

So that's his whole... thing. Trean, who even at that point had been a veteran of many human wars and who'd seen the things people do to each other, told him that was no excuse for wanting ALL of them dead (though, honestly, she was nursing quite a dislike for the species herself at that time). After her whole thing with him was done with, he was of course proven right on at least the last count, because she and the other Shadowkind had to deal with a lot of residual prejudice and in some cases institutional repression of their kind. There are several reasons she never came clean about it; first, relations between Shadow and humanity at that time were really fragile, and if a prominent leader of the Shadow community was revealed to have been planning something like that, everything would've gone to hell very quickly. Second, once she realized she was pregnant with his child, she didn't want to cast any suspicion on herself or especially the kid that would result from that, because he would've had to deal with it for his entire very long life. And third, she didn't want to talk about it to anyone because she used to be a bit of a racist with regard to humans herself, and didn't want to admit that there was ever a time she would've not only agreed with him, but in all likelihood, helped him do it.

AAAAAAAAAA TEXT WALL. I'm so sorry, it's probably making your eyes bleed RIGHT NOW. But that's the story, and I'm stickin' with it.

Haha it's totally fine, I LOVE learning about characters. The things they went through were...wow. I mean, I totally understand the reasoning, and it must've been one hell of an interesting story to create. I really, really enjoyed reading this, and I've a new respect for Trean to go through all that and keep her mouth shut. To bottle it up must have been painful, but for Farael and overall peace, absolutely necessary.. o.o

Thank you so much in advance with the help I wish there was an active group in my area that plays DnD, but so far I can't find any. >.>

But its like if I cant sleep, curl up with a book and I can normally put myself out after two chapters or so. My boyfriend is trying to get us on a better sleep schedule. But because I have been sick for the past three days he is letting me sleep and take naps to get better. But starting in the middle of June my schedule will change drastically and I hope it means I can be a morning person again
