Tem, the story just keeps getting better and better, and I just love this moment, I know I've been in that same position as Nes

A time-skip? He sure cleans up nicely...
But what a disappointment. What are we to take away from this failure?

How does one bounce back from failing in front of his former-champ dad?
From my gaming experience, I feel enough frustration from failing to find that last collectible without having to resort to walkthroughs...

Ah yes, the feeling of disappointment and failure. One of many things I can relate to just by looking at this picture. The more I read this comic, the more I respect Ness as a character and the message the comic could potentially bring.
Ness did a fantastic job during his fight, though it may not be up to speed or par as many would expect but not for a lack of trying. For me though, I believe this is something every athlete and/or artist has been through at least once in their life, if not more.
That feeling of failure, whether you feel you failed on others or yourself. To which given what the context of the story has presented, it could be Ness believing he has failed his father. Unable to win the match or meet his fatherβs expectations or be like him.
And I believe this is not only unhealthy, but it is also probably the hardest yet the easiest lesson anyone can learn. And I speak from personal experiences as a performer, artist, and athlete.
βTo have pity over someone is a waste of energy, feeling sorry for yourself is even worse.β One unique lesson I learn that could translate to βfeeling like you failed someone is one thing, feeling that you failed yourself is another.β No one said that failure was going to be easy, but who said it was a bad thing?
Failing is one of the hardest yet easiest lessons to learn for a reason. Failure can bring out the best in people one way or another, and Ness is no different. Failure can teach humility, sympathy, and respect to one another. But failure has its negative viewpoints and perspectives, such as believing that youβre not good enough, youβre untalented or unintelligent.
I can see the view of disappointment in Ness, how he tried to be like his dad and feels like heβs failed him entirely. But not everyone should be expected to follow the same path, everyone has different strengths & weaknesses...it only makes us human. But only time would tell if that assumption is correct. And I hope that Ness takes this as a valuable lesson, and not only become a better fighter but become a better version of himself because of it.
Iβll be looking forwarding to reading more of the comic whenever it is out on Deviantart or Twitter. Itβs certainly captured my interest and I hope that others feel the same ^.^
Sometimes you have to think about what you want for yourself, not what others want or expect from you.

"If Dad can win every match, you can too."
But you're not your dad, Nes. You're *you*, and you're the best *you* that you can ever be. You gotta learn that, otherwise you'll never be successful... or happy.Β
Huh, so that's Nes's dad, didn't expect his first appearance to be an image on a phone. And his name is Irwin, apparently. Heh, and mini-Nes is so cute. Although I noticed that Irwin's ear has what looks to be bite-marks... probably from another fight?Β
Course now the important question is: will Irwin be disappointed in his son? Or just disappointed that Nes lost? Will he still be there for his boy? Time will tell...
Oh btw, forgot to commend you for doing such a tremendous job on the look of heartbreak and despondency on Nes's face.Β

Dracondis In reply to Kelaiah [2019-10-27 14:05:47 +0000 UTC]
His dad won every fight.Β He was clearly not challenging himself against opponents that mattered.Β He was a coward that only took on fights he knew he would win, or which were fixed so that he would win by people betting on them.Β A reputation for never losing is a sign of cowardice.
I'm telling you because you had the misfortune of attracting my attention with your first two lines of your comment, and it is to those that I'm replying, not you specifically.Β As I said, you just have the misfortune of uttering something I wished to comment upon.

Dracondis In reply to Kelaiah [2019-10-28 02:28:59 +0000 UTC]
No, those are my opinions.Β That's how I feel about those who always win.Β They're not really testing themselves, they haven't been challenged.Β So if his dad won every fight, then he was fighting inferior opponents and never really took on a real challenger.Β I find it sad that someone so weak could be a role-model, but since it's a father figure role-model, I suppose that's not too sad.
The story itself is proceeding slowly for my tastes, and I don't like what's going on.Β There's a level of frustration at the way things have been presented, and so far nothing makes sense.Β I can't find a lot of context to frame the story or its universe.Β This makes it difficult to read.Β There was no setup, no world building, no narration, no ... context.Β And so the story so far makes no sense to me.

Well, before you bring the hammer down on both the character and the story, you might want to wait until the whole thing's done. We don't know if Irwin won because he was never challenged, and we don't know how many more pages there are going to be. I believe Temiree said that right now, we're in "Act 1", so there's probably a whole lot more setup/context/etc to get through.Β
And I know it can be frustrating having to wait a week for each page, but that's how a lot of online comic artists do that. You just gotta be patient... or give up altogether and forget about the comic even existing.Β

Dracondis In reply to Kelaiah [2019-10-28 10:28:45 +0000 UTC]
All well and good, but it doesn't excuse confusing your readers in the first few pages.Β That's not drama.Β As a writer, I know full well that if I haven't captured the attention of my readers in the first three pages, I'm not going to keep them.Β Sometimes I don't get that.Β You don't have to give away the store, but you do have to make sure what you're writing makes sense.
Bear in mind that this is critique, not complaining.Β The artwork is excellent.Β I wouldn't follow if it wasn't.Β But the story needs some touch-up to make it more coherent.Β I can't draw so I would expect that I would need an artist to bring my stories to life.Β The same holds true for artists, who may have a story envisioned, but need a writer to make it less messy.Β
No hammer is being brought anywhere.Β I'm just saying that I'm not following the story, because at this point I can't even tell that there is one.Β While this works as a scene, it requires that you have enough interest built into the scene to get your readers to stick with you as you start to explain what they just witnessed.Β And if I wasn't already following purely for the artwork, I might not give this series a second look.Β It has promise, but its a little bit more messy than I like, seeing as I have no idea what I just saw.
