As is common with ghosts, they are trapped into repeating the events which caused their deaths. Specifically, Grey Hoof killed Ruby, and then Nightmare Moon killed the lot of them for killing Ruby, and injected the necessary power to fix them all in their damnation, if you go by Ardashir's version of it.

So... in the game it sounded like there were actually past versions of ponies making the same party again, and then their actual identities would awaken (like, Grey Hoof was perfectionist who would do anything to keep things as planned; Gladstone was thinking that what he's doing is right because Grey Hoof said so; Three Leaf was fan of prophecies; Roneo and Starlet were just dependent on others).
In here, it's like Mitta is time-looped but others are possessed by some mind of the curse that wants to make the town a perfect trap (if not then time loop and a lot of ponies suddenly interested in trapping someone seems improbable). Mitta is in center of the curse rather than Ruby... so... why is that something interested in trapping Mitta like that?
