well they actually have seen it, if you remember correctly in season 2 episode 3 when twilight is at the bench going bat shit insane. She see's children playing and all of a sudden the background turns red with anything physical turning black. Pretty much just like the game itself.

up till here i guess they pushed a pony in the fireplace because she was the only one of the entire town who got a cutiemark. that's why they got cursed too. not clear on the details yet
