His eyes are blue-gray, which can look purple in the sunlight. Plus, he's (SPOILERS) half-Galran, so his eye color isn't gonna look normal, but damn if it isn't pretty and enchant Lance all the same

I'm sorry if I sound like a smart*ss, but purple(well,violet) is actually an eye color...it's extremely rare tho. Also include the.....other reason...and well yea! Purple eyes! :3

It may not be, but Voltron is a really good show regardless. The sci-fi may not do it for you, but it's story is sure to draw you in

How much darkness, gore, and death is there?

It does have a dark theme considering Team Voltron is trying to stop Zarkon, the leader of the Galra and a tyrannical emperor, but there is no gore. I cannot promise about the death because the original series from the 80's did kill one of their main characters, and a lot of side characters have lost their lives in the fight against the Galra in this new show (which I honestly like because it gives this sense of urgency that Team Voltron REALLY needs to end this war to stop the senseless slaughter), but in this new rendition of the show that particular character had his name changed and is alive (which is one of my favorite changes they've done). He also has a MUCH bigger role in this version.
All in all it's very well-written (which isn't surprising considering it's done by the same people that created Avatar: The Last Airbender), the music feels very 80's and modern at the same time, and the voice acting is superb (they've got Steven Yuen (Walking Dead, Wan from LoK, etc), Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time), Josh Keaton (who is a hilarious on twitter, you should really check him out on there), Neil Kaplan, and others, the humor is spot-on (which is good considering the show is aimed at children), the art and animation is spectacular (including the 3-D renderings for the Robeasts and Voltron itself), and other elements that make up this show.
You won't be disappointed going into this show, I can promise you that.
TL;DR: It's dark, there is no gore, there is death, this show is good. Go watch it.

There's no loads of blood (the Paladins and others do bleed so there's no censorship there), but there is death of characters, and there are a lot of good plot twists. I highly recommend this show
