Description Update: Finally done! Jazzed up with textures and everything. As you can see, tentaculus is practically a Rangda mask with octopus tentacles under it. This deviation was made as an avatar (criterion: an original character/symbol that actually describes you) for an art club in my uni, Bionic. And no, it has nothing to do with prosthetics.

have you ever noticed that he looked similar with this guy? [link]

honestly it was unintentional.

P.S. it's a heptapus, hence the seven arms.

I'm getting vibes of my cephalopodic hydra concept.

He is awesomeness incarnate. The liquidy tentacles (as thomastapir mentioned) add to his cool. Worthy of Cthulhu himself!

thanks Emile!

that's how actual tentacles behave when taken out of water, I suppose. But I must say that the forms are somewhat stylized, with almost triangular corners...

I think there's something off with the shading on the suction cups, am I right?

You're welcome!

Ah, I see. But yeah, stylization works very well. The suction cups are perfectly done, I don't think there's anything wrong with them, no?

What I really like about this so far is the variance in thickness of the tentacles--the way the big one on the right appears to be "flattening out" under gravity...It gives it a real menacing weight and sense of strength, reinforced by those ridgey supports along the length of the tentacle. The one on the bottom left appears to be "puddling" or liquifying, which is both creepy and provides a nice sense of contrast with the firmer tentacle on the right. Beautiful color and lighting, and I can't get enough of those perfect little suction cups...Great work so far, I can't wait to see it completed!

Well, thanks so much Thomas!

I observed real octopus tentacles from photographs, especially those specimens that have been preserved or taken out of water - and it's quite intriguing if you see how the actual material behaves, probably caused by the visco-elasticity of the muscles. Cephalopod tentacles can be tough, rubbery or gelatinous, as you have known already...wonderful creatures those mollusks are.

(I think that explains my affinity for all kinds of slimy, rubbery/gelatinous animals )

those suction cups are made by using custom brush (and you can made your own as well), which explains its regularity in shape and interval.

Yeah, you did a great job of capturing the different textures, densities, and viscosities of the tentacles! It's a very authentic detail that a lot of artists with less bio training would probably overlook.

Reminds me of the time I found a nudibranch in a tidepool...I picked it up and it just instantly flattened out! Put him back in the water and he puffed up again.

That's a great use of a custom brush, I'll have to experiment with it!

So... amazing! O_O; Has a really different look compared to the first one!~ I like how complex it looks, the face looks really defined and I can't wait to see how it ends up! :3 Awesome job and keep at it!

Thanks Al!

I'm glad that there's something like 'real progress' from the previous one. I usually fail at painting without pencil lineart, so....

Anyways, this piece is really nothing compared to pros in dA. I personally admire 's style and deviations, which are just too fantastic and realistic to be described. Well perhaps you can still trace the artificiality, but still, he managed to paint things that can actually knock off some concept and poster artists from working in Hollywood.

O: np at all. Ah, well I'm trying to go all-digital work now... once I get my operating systems and partitions on my tablet pc set up.. driver downloads are driving me crazy heh.

Yeah, but just remember that you'll get there eventually someday O:

And yeah.. that's really amazing.. <3 the painting of Two-Face...

Keep up the great work!~
