Description Lythronax, the king fo gore, probably the most awesome name ever for a tyrannosaur. I decided to draw it again for the tyranosaur project, as the old one teratophoneus.deviantart.com/a… really wasnt that good, it was a bit too shrink wrapped, and the proportions were a little bit off. Also the old one wasnt jsut badass enough, this dinosaur just has to be drawn invlólving it ripping sth apart, with that name it bascially asks to be depicted  with blood and gore all over it, so thats what I did, well not that extreme, but it does the king of gore justice!

nantoyrannus is even smaller(at least the fossils that we have of him). And then there is Nanuqsaurus which is only 5-6 metres long

Nanotyrannus is only about 5 meters, right?

The name is even funnier if you compare to "litronas" in spanish that sound almost equal and means "bottles of a litre of wine" that use young people in order to get drunk...

amazing image btw

The 8m Lythronax (and the even worse but commonly alledged 2.5t weight figure) seems to be yet another incorrect idea propagated by the media. The skeletal in the description paper measures ~6.8m along the axial skeleton and ~6.6m in a straight line from snout to tail end.

Anyway, awesome composition!

thats true but the holotype was not fully grown when it died. There are size estimatations that put the adult animal between 7.3 and 8 metres.

Most dinosaurs aren't, it's in the nature of growing during adulthood and usually dying before reaching senescence.
In case you mean it is subadult, I've been trying to get to the basis of those claims too, but to no avail-it is not indicated anywhere by its describers. Have I missed something?
Also adult sizes for immature specimens are typically guesses, it's unlikely that there would be any scientific estimate, even if the specimen was a subadult (there are none for other dinosaurs were that's the case, e.g. Siats, Apatosaurus sp., Baryonyx, Eustreptospondylus, Dilophosaurus, Cryolophosaurus...).

If you'd like, I work at a museum (the Museum of Ancient Life) that commonly works with the museum where Lythronax is on display. So I feel pretty adept at it if you have any questions.

wow thats cool, could you maybe find out if the lythronax holotype comes from an adult or subadult animal? Thatt would help a lot

Primalk In reply to Teratophoneus [2015-08-16 17:41:39 +0000 UTC]

It is from a sub adult. It was at the time of its death about 6 meters long.

Teratophoneus In reply to Primalk [2015-08-16 19:40:24 +0000 UTC]

so an  8 metres size estimate for an adult seems reasonable?
anyways, thanks for the help

Great job!  You really did it justice!  I love all the details in the skin and feathers, especially around the neck; it looks very powerful.  Nice work on the shading too and the massive hunk of meat is a funny and cool addition.  One of your best works so far.

thanks a lot, really appreciated, the head really did a long time to make, because it has that very special shape to it. I am not a 100 %  satisfied with it, but its a lot better than the old one.

Alexanderlovegrove In reply to Teratophoneus [2015-08-15 21:56:52 +0000 UTC]

Cool. It looks great to me but I know that feeling from my own work!  I often find I change the head shape a lot on theropods when I add soft tissue, and it can be really hard to distinguish the different tyrannosaurids from the reconstructions rather than the skulls.  I guess it's one of those situations where we can't be completely sure what they really looked like anyway!
