Description
Heres my f 8 e crusader. I seldom build post wwii air craft but the crusader is an awesome looking aircraft and I am building more modern jets in the next time. A Su 27 Flanker from Hasegawa is already finished and I will start work on a Mig 29 Fulcrum tomorrow.Backround: Designed as the successor to the Vough F7U cutlass, the Crusader was a very important plane. The cutlass had proofed a failure, it was difficult to handle and land. Because of that, the crusader was called Voughts last chance. The crusader was built as a navy aircraft, that was set to operate from carriers. For that it needed a hook and good start and landing characteristics. A powerful engine made the crusader the navys first supersonic jet. Originally designed as an air superiority fighter, the crusader was quickly adopted for multi role purposes. It was also referrred to as the last gunfighter, because in the minds of the planners, missiles replaced the gun. Still, the designers of vought gave the crusader 4 deadly 20 mm cannons on the "cheak" of the airplane. AIM 9 sidewinders could also be carried ,giving the crusaders a hard hitting amament. The Crusader could be refueled from the air. Its big air intake sat under the nose, giving the aircraft a distinctive appearence . One of its most notable features was a special wing. It didnt have flaps, the whole wing could be lifted by 7 degreees incresing landing performance. The stabilizers were aso completely movable. Its firs combat missions over Vietnam showed the effectiveness of the "last gunfighter". It was agile, fast and very deadly. It scored a staggering kill to loss ratio of 6:1! 19 planes fell victim o the crusader. Additionally, they were also used as bomber escorts, and ground attack duties. The crusader was also the base for the succesful A7 E corsair II ground attack aircraft. A reconnaisance version of the crusader also existed . While the crusaders fighter variant were slowly withdrawn from service in the lae 70s, the reconnaisance versions were used till the late 80s. France also used the crusader. Nevertheless, the crusader had its drawbacks. It was an unforgiving aircraft and espeacially landing was very difficult as the landing gear was very short. In fact the aircrafts tail sat nearly on the ground when standing and made landing therefore very difficult. Because of its short landing gear, pilots and ground crews refered to the crusader as the gator. Nevertheless, the crusader remains as an icon of aviation.
The model kit
This is an older kit. Its from the time when revell was known as revell monogram. i think it was rereleased in 2001 or at that ime but it isnt in production any longer. So how did I get this one? The man at the model store told me that sometimes arepresentative of revell comes by and brings some old model kis which werent sold at the time they were produced. This happens not very often, but he told me that there can be some real rare treasures can be among these. This is one of them .Also, the kits are cheap because the boxes are sometimes in a bad shape. So lets see what weยดve got here
Detail: Good. The landing gear looks fantastic and the seat is just awesome. The pilot also looks nice. Overall i think that there could have been more but it is already very good detailed. I likeit
****
Fitting: Although older, the fitting was very good. Only the wing ends which can be built folded up had some gaps. The rest was perfect
****
Functions: As always, jet model dont have functionsmostly. But this crusader has a "hidden" functions. Although the manual says he front wheel should be glued, you dont have to and the wheels ismovable.
*****
Decals: The kit has a super decal sheet, very big and colourful. The decals are of old age but still looks awesome and are of typical revell quality
*****
Extrapoints: What can I say, the kit is awesome and i am so glad I have bought it, its just so nice. I really like it and its big decals.
*****
Fazit: What a nice kit. It is suitable for beginner, looks very appealing and is just so nice to build. I had ton of funassembling this kit and i would build it any time again. If you can get your hands on it, dont hseitate, this kit is very nicely done . Revell has rereleased som real old sh*t the last years, many are very old and bad detailed kits. This kit is one that definetely should get a rerelease because its just very good and in my opinion still holds up today with its quite good detail.
*****
Pinting: Alsmost completely done with airbrush. Cockpit done with brushes, using grenne, grey silver, black greeen, blueish gre etc . Most of the rest was done with airbrush, using grey for the upper side and white for the underside, burnt iron for the engine, black and aluminium for the wheels, red foe the landing gear flaps edges.

Whoa.. never knew that the crusaders use fuselage-side hardpoint, i thought they use underwing or underbelly hardpoint like any other aircraft!
Very nice model anyway, well done!

Thanks a lot, I really really appreciate it. Especially because you are an US Navy officer and therefore you have a real "relationship" to this aircraft. No kidding, as I built and painted the kit I thought to myself "what would NavJAG say about my crusader?". So I am very glad that you like it
