Description Every morning, Reno reluctantly falls out of bed and flips through the want ads in the Wall Market Journal, hoping just one day he'll find that perfect job he was born to do. Not many openings for official Quality Control Beer Tester Video Game Junkie, though. Ah well. Off to work it is...

I did NOT like Reno's design in Advent Children...well. At first. It's grown on me I guess since then. But I always pictured him scruffy...Irish...wiry. Kind of a punk'd out Ewan McGreggor, not that pretty-boy whateveritis in AC. So here's my version. I hope you like it. Have fun picking out all the references in the picture.

Woah, this turned out awesome! All the little details and references give it a lotta visual interest - it doesn't let you rake your eyes over it once and then leave it alone. It demands attention and investigation! The Chinese takeout and the tie-strangled kodama are my faves XD

Lotsa attention to detail, right down to the silky lining of his sports jacket. Very sweet. Nicely done expression, good hands, good job. It was worth the time spent, I think ^_^

You know, that corner with the strangled kodama and the power plugs turned out so wonderfully ironic, and it was totally unintentional at first. Reno is almost inconsequential to me compared to that corner of the room. Maybe I'll go back and make it like this huge octopus of plugs coming out of the wall. Eh, I dunno...maybe that'd be overdoing it. Still, strangled kodama, evil power company and Reno's lack of respect for both of them sums up the whole thing. I'm very smitten with my own picture... Then again, I just finished it. That'll probably change in a few months.

Thank you for your comment, sensai. If not for you, I wouldn't continue to push my limits. Your feedback is always welcome as is your friendship.

Just in case you're curious, yes the ad on the back of the paper really does say something:

"Here's a bunch of propoganda and lies we like to make up for ourselves to make us look
better to you, the Little People, whom we love to piss on. You'd like to think you have a
choice, but you really don't. We own all your asses. So come work for our Big Evil
Corporation and kill defenseless animals and babies for a living. You don't have to be
the one to pullthe trigger, but if that's your thing, we have positions open for that as well.
Because at SHIN-RA, we don't care who your parents were. We're ALL Bastards."

yay!! that slogan just about made my LIFE. pure, pure skill. now you need a tseng one to match! just free up the next six months, ok? lol. i need things to be explained to me... whats the significance of the little toy in the background? it looks like...i dont know... that crazy dude from mortal kombat... *most likely wrong*

There's no real significance to any of it. It's just Reno sitting in his crappy room, which just happens to be full of crap I like. Clockwise starting at about "one-o'clock" you have:

Yes, that's Scorpion from Mortal Kombat eadly Alliance. I've been on a HUGE MK kick since I got the game over a year ago. There's actually character development I never even knew about, and Scorpion is one of the coolest/baddest/most tragic characters in the whole series, if MK can actually have pathos. Besides which, it's fun to kick these character's asses around the Mortal Kombat arenas. I've been wanting to do a MK fanart for a long time, but just don't have the time. I also figured of all the kinds of video games Reno would actually play, fighting games would be his favorite.

That is a Duff beer can sitting on top of the radiator in the far right corner of the picture. Big Simpson's fan, here. That show has lended me more quotes that any other I can think of. I could sit an quote Simpson's for a whole day.

Around 4:30 there, that's Chinese food takeout, because Chinese food takeout is TEH YUM. And I'd never drawn a takeout box before. It was kinda fun.

5:00, that's a Jhonen Vasquez design on the coffee mug, if you've seen Invader Zim. There's a huge poster in Zim's kitchen with that face on it that says, "I EAT FOOD."

Reno is holding "The Wall Market Journal" and wearing moogle pajamas. He just woke up ten minutes ago, and what the fuck are you doing in his room?

Shin-Ra employee handbook stuffed under the leg of a wobbly chair.

The stangled plushie is a Kodama from "Princess Mononoke." Miyazaki is my hero, and the kodama were so adorable. These innocent tree spirits represented everything about the natural, unmolested world, pretty much the exact opposite of everything Shin-Ra (the plugs in the wall and the neon sign out the window that reads "Hell") stands for: evil corporation willing to sacrifice the entire planet's enviroment for a few bucks. The Shin-Ra propoganda on the back of the newspaper is there to remind you of the influence they have on Midgar's whole processed environment.

The tie, is of course, the tie that Reno presumably never wears.

That whole corner works together as one big ironic statement. You have the kodama choking on the bonds of consumerism and authority. The tie and the handbook signify the lack of respect Reno has for either the natural world OR authority. Reno is a character with a mind--and agenda--of his own. He works for Shin-ra because he likes the paycheck. If he happens to do the "right thing" it's not because he's necessarily being charitable, he's doing it because it suits him as well. For the most part, he's rather indifferent to the world around him, I think, and to his own health for that matter, as noted by the cigarette clamped between his lips and the clutter in his room.

In short, he's far from noble, but he sure is fun to look at.

Guess there was more significance to that than I originally thought. And no more fanart for some time, sorry. It didn't take me a WHOLE six months to do this picture--I did other stuff in between it--but right now I have stuff to do that will earn me money, and stuff I need to do that I've already been paid for. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to doing a Tseng fanart, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Um...'cause I couldn't think of anything else at the time? It didn't sit right with me either, so I changed it. It's a little more obscured now and it says "Hell," which is a reference to a seedy biker bar that's been a setting for many RP's.

Baidabel In reply to TeriStearns [2004-09-17 04:29:58 +0000 UTC]

That 'Hell' is a lot harder to find too. 'Sam' just stuck out, so I like 'Hell' better.
