how did you manage to focus on it?

Long practice, a decent telephoto lens, and a really fast shutter speed--perhaps the same way you photographed your ID picture, from the looks of it? Β  Β But it greatly helps when one can predict a bird's trajectory. Β Thanks for commenting!

In my I'd I got lucky and those birds were all around trying to eat the food. Beside seagull here are not afraid to get close to people. They even snatch the food from ppl.

Well, there's a certain irreducible element of luck in every picture, I suppose, but, like you, I benefited from the fact that the seagulls on Sanibel are accustomed to being around people. Β Next time you're out with your camera near seagulls, get someone nearby to throw crackers in the air, and you'll have photo ops galore! Β

That looks like a Ring-billed Gull (Larus Delawarensis), actually, not a Herring Gull. Ring-billed Gulls have yellow feed and a black ring around their bills while Herring Gulls have a red mark on their beak and pink feet. Herring gulls are also bigger than ring-bills.

Juveniles are a little different, but this looks like a non-breeding adult ring-billed gull.

You're absolutely right--it's a Ring-billed Gull, and thanks so much for taking the time to correct my misidentification.

No problem. I once made the same exact mistake myself, actually.

I also love the background - it's more interesting then common neutral one, good job.
