Description
This is a last minute piece I wanted to get done in time for the release of The Gospel of Judas Iscariot. This is thought to be a 3rd Century document from early Gnostic Christians and I have been looking forward to this event since I learned about it a year ago.I've also decided to make an Unlikely Icon series of 3 all together, this one being the 2nd and The Archangel Lucifer being the 1st.
Books of interest regarding Judas:
Judas: Images of the Lost Disciple by Kim Paffenroth
The Gospel of Judas by National Geographic Society
The Lost Gospel: The Quest for the Gospel of Judas Iscariot

Considering this guy's basically the epitome of traitors, this is a very unlikely icon. Beautifully done! Looks like a real icon you'd find in an Orthodox church or something.

I have a theory (im not a Christian but i still study it) Judas was told by Jesus to betray him, so Jesus would be crucified so sins would be washed away. Perhaps Judas was the most loyal of all, willing to do what others would not.

Kind of harkens back to Jesus telling the Apostles that He would have to die, and Peter protesting this, and Jesus basically calling him demon-possessed and telling him it was destiny.

I got to say that DA has became the main dictionary of all images; i was looking for references to base myself on Judas and Google drove me here... almost all images i look for brings me back to DA.
BTW, this is beyond a beautiful picture you've made....would you give me me permission to use it (with a link here and credits to you)?

For a cameo (or painting on a wall) and references in our comic:

Nothing vulgar will be done to him. Of course, a link and credit will go to you. We couldn't find a pic of him other than seeing him kissing Christ or some angle that didn't favor us.

This is a great picture; I love the style you're using.
I was wondering, could I use this picture? I'm doing a project that includes the Gospel of Judas, and this would be perfect; I'd give you full credit and everything.
Pleeeaaaaase?

If Judas was ever given sainthood, what would he be the patron saint of, I wonder? (by the way, even the canonical King James version of the Bible can't even agree on how Judas "supposedly" killed himself...if he even did. In one passage, it says he hung himself; which is the more commonly held view. While in another passage, it says he threw himself off a cliff or something.)

TestingPointDesign In reply to StainedGlassJesus [2011-01-17 01:14:53 +0000 UTC]
Perhaps the patron saint of religious textual contradictions? The exact contradiction of how he died is referenced in this icon. He holds a rope (showing the one version of him hanging himself) and his intestines (showing the other version of his guts bursting while walking in a field).

OH I remember the guts thing! (I don't know why I thought it was throwing himself off a cliff.) I think maybe the Patron Saint of Loyal Friends, or something to that akin. If there isn't already a saint of Loyal Friends already. Is there?

TestingPointDesign In reply to StainedGlassJesus [2011-01-28 07:55:20 +0000 UTC]
Patron saint of Loyal Friendship would be very fitting I think. If there is a saint for such a thing, he/she should certainly be dethroned by Judas.

actually, believe Judas did exactly what he was supposed to do. Jesus was sent here yo die on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins, to substitute for the animal sacrifices previouly offered by the people. Jesus's sacrifice satisfied God's requirement for a blood sacrifice, as witness by the shroud separaating the hily of holies from the outer temple. God was no longer isolated from the people, and they could come before him "jist as they were". A;lthough the books of the 4 Gospels do not follow him too much, I think he did what he was supposed to do, and as such, just might have gone to heaven. I don't know about that.

Even taking the stance that Judas was an evil man who followed the Devil to betray Jesys, the necessity of the act and the Christian idea of ultimate forgiveness mean (to me) that this guy deserves way more love--or at the least, way less hate--than he's been getting. I'm not a big fan of this style, but thank you very much for it!

Excellent work on all of your icons! I love the style. And the concepts behind them are very interesting. In fact, I have been thinking of doing a similar series, albeit a little closer to what some may consider 'orthodox'. I am thinking more of a look into significant people, who are not recognized as 'saints' by the Church, whose lives merit respect similar to that given to traditional Saints.
Keep up the good work!

Question: Do you believe Judas is a traitor?

TestingPointDesign In reply to KlinkHammer [2009-04-09 05:22:42 +0000 UTC]
Meh possibly. I've made these icons to be more in line with modern-day icons.
I believe Judas is portrayed as a traitor in the story of Jesus. Whether he was or not is debatable. Thats why I've made this icon; to show Judas as the enigmatic character he is.

Thanks! Yup, you are correct. I also included his intestines to demonstrate the other way Judas dies in the Bible(by his guts bursting out in a field). A contradiction in the Bible? That's absurd!

Because, if you think about it, Judas had to do it for Jesus to achieve his destiny. I like the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" because it touches on that, rather than being "RARGH, Judas, you betrayer!"
Peter denied Him 3 times, and he became pope....playing favorites? Lol.

TestingPointDesign In reply to Gabzies [2008-12-12 22:00:13 +0000 UTC]
Exactly! The Last Temptation of Christ is one of my favorite movies because it illustrates the dichotomy of Judas' "betrayal" beautifully.

That, and because David Bowie was Pontius Pilate. Lol. I got chills in the movie with the little girl angel, I knew she was bad news! Watching that, I don't really see what all the hubbub about Mel Gibson's Passion. I mean, I can't imagine how that book/movie frayed the nerves of the clergymen.
"Ave Satani" just started on my playlist. CRAP.
π: 0 β©: 1
TestingPointDesign In reply to Gabzies [2008-12-13 14:48:18 +0000 UTC]
Haha. That is true. Bowie makes everything better. Some clergy who actually took the time to watch "Last Temptation" actually appreciated it for demonstrating Christ's conflicted human/divine nature. The rest of them heard there was a sex scene with Jesus and were immediately outraged, boycotting and making a fuss over nothing as they usually do.
