Here’s a map of Scandinavia in my Fallout : Europe setting, enjoy !
After the collapse of the European Commonwealth, Scandinavia returned to its usual division after a brief attempt at a unified government. Due to its low population and the fact that the Norwegian oil reserves were depleted long ago, the region was less targeted compared to other parts of Europe. Unfortunately, the nuclear winter was harsher on them than other European countries and even nowadays temperatures are still distinctively lower than before.
Kingdom of Norway : After the War, the Norwegian government collapsed entirely and the royal family died or went missing. In 2254, Harald “Kjøtt-tyggere” Mikkelsen, a raider chief from Trondheim united the region and reclaimed the old title of “King of Norway”. In 2289, his son is in power, and proves to be quite competent, although probably a bit overambitious. The Kingdom survives by fishing and raiding other factions along the Atlantic coast. The Cathedral of Nidaros is used as the seat of government and royal palace. The ships used by the raiders are usually repurposed pre war fishing boats, less impressive than the famed longships.
Statkraft : Once the fallout dissipated, this company formerly under the control of the Norwegian State used their unique knowledge on how to operate the various hydraulic power plants of the country to play a important role in the new world. With its headquarters established on the massive pre-war dam on the Sima river, the company can decide which faction to supply with electricity. Of course, the power grid is a shadow of what it was, but Statkraft can use their very well guarded knowledge to restore it against a very heavy fee.
The Scotslaw : It is no secret that the UK has been more affected by the Great War than Scandinavia, which led to certain migration from the isles to the peninsula. One of the most important one was a massive population movement from Scotland to the region of Stavanger, the refugees crossed the North Sea and established relays on the derelict offshore stations to reach the less radioactive Norwegian coast in the early days of the post-War era. Nowadays the Scots have replaced the local population and kept a lot of their traditions while incorporating certain Norwegian elements to their culture and language. Ironically the Scandinavian Scots are amongst the main raider groups currently attacking their former homeland.
Trolland/ODC : More than a century after the War, the Scandinavians thought they had seen every mutation possible, they didn’t expect the sudden appearance of a race of green 2,20 meters tall humanoid, strong like a bull and but not as bright, and with a penchant for human flesh. In the beginning, the Trolls were disorganized, but eventually decided they needed to form a country “just like the short-people” and invaded Oslo. The human survivors, already organized in a local government, didn’t manage to resist the terrifying mutated warriors and fell back to Drammen from where they are trying to take their city back. The seemingly unnatural apparition of the Trolls led some people to theorize they were artificially planted in the region by none other than the Americans, whose presence still haunts Scandinavia in various ways : the Baltic Enclave, the Icelandic-American Clan, the alleged surviving American fleet in the North Sea and their former UK puppet.
Project Borealia : Originally a scientific-led project supposed to prospect the region for mineral resources deep underground and search for ancient viruses in the permafrost (to be used militarily), the vast scientific contingent in Leir 27 were too far away from civilization to be affected by the War, they took refuge in the large underground base waiting for the fallout to pass. The scientists managed to survive underground by growing mushrooms and getting their electricity from the deep magma underneath. Nowadays, Project Borealia strives to become an underground utopy, very scientifically advanced (moreso than Vault-Tec) and enjoying all the comforts of modern life, a lot of them spend their entire life without ever seeing the sun or the “Surfacers”. Their seemingly endless wealth, mysterious technology and short stature due to nutritional deficiency earned them the appellation Dverger, “dwarves” in Norwegian.
Sami confederation: The global cooling that followed the War incited the Sami people of Norway Sweden and Finland to move further South towards the Baltic Sea. Given that the few people inhabiting the northern coast of the gulf of Botnia left for the South too, there wasn’t much opposition. Nowadays the Sami live in small tribes following the heavyantlers herds, mostly unaffected by the global chaos further south. They make contact with merchants near the coast in Beaivvassiida, their only permanently inhabited town.
Bernadottia : The Bernadotte family survived the war and used their status to reclaim their kingly power over the Stockholm region. They ruled with an iron fist, suppressing any dissent and living a sheltered life away from the poor masses. After a while they were overthrown by a chaotic revolution which saw several ideologies compete to fill the power gap in the region while the royal family left for Gävle where they established the new kingdom of Bernadottia. Though reconquering their Kingdom was initially their priority, it quickly became apparent it was more comfortable to just rule over their new kingdom like they were doing in Stockholm, while avoiding their previous mistakes. As time passes, Bernadottia is becoming more and more its own nation distinct from the rest of Sweden.
Feminist Supremacist Republic : One of the main parties fighting for power after the Swedish revolution was the Radical Feminist Union, a group of women claiming that masculinity was what killed the old world and proposing a radical communist-leaning androgynist program. After a Revolution in the Revolution, they seized power and further radicalized themselves, enacting a strict gender ratio and eliminating the excess men by deportation or extermination. The government quickly became a terror state akin to its communist counterparts in the East. Nowadays men represent 5% of the population, and are kept mostly for menial or arduous tasks, scientists of the Republic are currently working on a way to artificially make sure all new-borns are female in order to finally get rid of the masculine plague.
Swedish Committee for Efficient Pillaging : After the War, some Swedes went back to their old habits of plundering the coasts of the Baltic sea, unfortunately, the lack of organisation between the raiding parties led to some problems : groups coming to raid a certain location only to find another one beat them to it a few days ago, fights between parties for the loot, people getting lost and pillaging their own coast etc... Eventually the committee was formed to finally bring some organisation to this. It is made of white-collar workers that establish quotas and create a planning to make sure that the targets have time to replenish their wealth and that every raider has its share.
Lutheria : The remains of the Lutheran church of Sweden, led by a ghoul pastor. The Church has taken a few curious theological decisions over the years, including systematic burnings of suspected witches and wizards, cannibalism, and slavery, but other than that, business as usual.
Republic of Denmark : The republic became a major trade powerhouse after conquering western Scania and enslaving most of its population. The control over the Øresund allows it to regulate traffic and extract heavy taxes but also makes Denmark a target for raiding parties further North. And with half of the population considered at best 2nd class citizens and most often slaves, a revolt is always on the horizon.
The Bog People : Deep inside the forests of Finland live the Bog People, as the name given to them by the other Finns suggests, bogs and lakes are very important in this new culture. The inhabitants believe a powerful Eldritch deity lives in the water and priests can speak to it during mysterious rituals at night. The Bog People habitations are often described as being “unsanitary” by their neighbours, and the constant humidity causes mold to grow everywhere, including their skin. So far, no amount of sauna (which they are fond of) has managed to get rid of this annoying irradiated fungus.
Icelandic clans : Iceland was invaded by the US in 2022 when it became evident fuel was going to be depleted soon, the island’s energy was entirely redirected to the US leaving the Icelanders to freeze to death. But despite the Americans staying until 2077, the locals survived through it all. Nowadays Iceland is divided in different independent clans who regularly meet in the Thingvellir.
Kingdom of Lithuania : A rising kingdom in the Baltic Wastes. The current queen Sofija the 1st is the main architect of this success. She almost fully unified the country militarily and enacted several reforms, stabilizing the various clans and factions of the Region. Her daughter Gražina shows great martial prowess and could, under the right circumstances, take her mother’s Kingdom to new heights when she eventually inherits the throne.
