Description
While attending a party at a friend's camp at Canoe Point on St. Joseph Island in May of 2006, I decided to make the best of the dark, clear skies and photograph some star trails.I had already taken a similar shot from this location [link] a year earlier, but felt that the composition and image quality could be improved upon. At 78 minutes, this was a considerably longer exposure than my previous attempt, and I kept the ISO down to 100 this time in hopes of producing a cleaner image. As with my previous attempt, I had already had a few beer before I set up the camera, but rather than just aiming blindly and hoping for the best, I used a flashlight to get my bearings and compose the shot properly before opening the shutter.
Due to the length of the exposure, the original image was riddled with hot pixels, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time zooming in and cloning them out in Photoshop. Hopefully my next camera will be a little more forgiving with exposures of this length.

Great shot, I really liked the last one you did but this is a lot better I guess star trails are the kind of shot better not taken spontaneously

Very gorgeous. If I ever get a nice camera that can do fancy stuff like this, I will try star trails.

Thank you, and thanks for the . It's easy enough to do - the hard part is getting a clear, moonless night away from city lights.

Thank you, and thanks for the . And you have a Nikon D80? I know the D50 only allows bulb exposures of up to 30 minutes, but I'm not sure about the D80.

Thank you, and thanks for the . And thankfully, I wasn't just sitting there the whole time. I left the camera alone to go have a few beer around the campfire on the beach.
