Description While attending a party at a friend's camp at Canoe Point on St. Joseph Island in May of 2006, I decided to make the best of the dark, clear skies and photograph some star trails.

I had already taken a similar shot from this location [link] a year earlier, but felt that the composition and image quality could be improved upon. At 78 minutes, this was a considerably longer exposure than my previous attempt, and I kept the ISO down to 100 this time in hopes of producing a cleaner image. As with my previous attempt, I had already had a few beer before I set up the camera, but rather than just aiming blindly and hoping for the best, I used a flashlight to get my bearings and compose the shot properly before opening the shutter.

Due to the length of the exposure, the original image was riddled with hot pixels, and I had to spend a considerable amount of time zooming in and cloning them out in Photoshop. Hopefully my next camera will be a little more forgiving with exposures of this length.

how do you do a 78 minute exposure? I have a canon EOS 350D is it possible to do that on them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tfavretto In reply to mschagen1 [2008-02-21 01:37:56 +0000 UTC]

You need a remote shutter release (either wireless or with a cable - both can be found for cheap online), and you set the camera to manual mode with an exposure time of BULB. The shutter stays open until you click the button again.

Excellent shot

Thanks. And you need to have either a wireless or cable remote shutter release, set the camera to manual mode and set the exposure to BULB.

Hey nice picture

I got a "you know this picture"-feeling ... deja vu xD

Well ... about your problems with hotspots - I took a smiliar picture (especially smiliar exposuretime) and I hadn't so much problems with hot pixels - I used my Nikon D40 maybe you want to take a look at my picture:

I'm not sure, but I get a ton of hot pixels with long exposures. Maybe it's just the camera though.

Thank you very much, and thanks for the !. I think I'd prefer to use film for these types of shots, it would definitely result in a much cleaner image. I need to get a wider angle lens for my film camera though.

Great shot. I wish my camera were a little more forgiving of star-trail photography too - at the moment it's pretty much unusable for it...

tfavretto In reply to strangelight [2007-11-10 23:39:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. And I know how you feel. I'm usually a little wary of shooting star trails just because I know how much post-processing will be needed to produce something presentable.

strangelight In reply to tfavretto [2007-11-11 09:11:18 +0000 UTC]

What do you shoot with? I use a Nikon D70s and it's terrible at very low light work (although that might have something to do with the fact that in their wisdom, Nikon only let it go down to ISO 200...). I also tend to get odd purple patches at the corner of the frame. Perhaps I'll go back to film to do some star trails at some point...

tfavretto In reply to strangelight [2007-11-13 02:38:37 +0000 UTC]

I shoot with a Canon 300D (Digital Rebel). I also tend to get an odd purple tinge along the right edge of the image when shooting ultra long exposures. I just patch it up afterward in Photoshop, along with the hundreds of hot pixels that pop up. I certainly plan on shooting film in these types of situations in the future though, although the lens on my film camera doesn't go any wider than 35mm.

strangelight In reply to tfavretto [2007-11-13 17:43:26 +0000 UTC]

Likewise - but it's better than dealing with the wretched hot pixels!

Good luck with your future film adventures...
