Description

Happy Mermay, everybody.

Way back in my early days of submitting stuff here I did a sequence of Ayeka as a mermaid turning into a polyp.  While some of the original expressions were good, on the whole, I've never been fully satisfied with it.  That was back in my days of tracing references stitched together and it showed.  It really limited the overall quality.  That, and I never was pleased with the final polyp design.  I'd tried to use some art techniques I really didn't understand very well and it just ended up looking weird.

Now, I decided I wanted to see what that pic looked like done properly, so I asked Blacksheep to help me with the redo, providing me with linework that kept the best parts of the original, but improved on everything else.  The lines were fantastic.  But you can see that just by looking at the pic.

I think I've figured some things out with the whirlpool effect.  Frame three is the one where it looks right, but having the comparison point of the other two helped me work out a little more of why it looks right.  I had drawn a different effect on stage 4, but it looked super wrong, so in the end I cheapened out and just flipped the third frame effect.  It looks better, but it creates the illusion of the whirlpool spinning in the opposite direction.  But I know WHY that's the case now, so in the future, I can probably do better.

This also originally had a much more detailed background, which I liked a lot.  Unfortunately, it had the effect of making the foreground figures look flatter, which hurt the overall effect.  So, I decided to go even more minimalist and abstract with it.  The pic with the original background, as well as the flat colors are available for viewing on my Patreon (visible for a $5 pledge), so if anyone wants to see the progression, or just see the details that the effects obscure, that's where you can go.

On the whole, I'm pleased with the final results, mostly, but I think the things I learned overall made this a more valuable experience than I was initially expecting it to be.  So, that's good.  Plus, for once, I really got a theme month pic actually done on time.
