Occasionally societies and cultures make their home in deep underground caverns. Sometimes to make use of unused real estate within a planet's interior, or sometimes people just have a strange compulsion to live underground.
On the planet Geb there is a thriving underground civilization. The planet is a superearth class world with a dying core, some colonists moved deeper into the planet's core to avoid the surface gravity. The planet's caves are home to near humans, high grav adapts from the surface, mole uplifts and ant uplifts.
The ants are the descendants of a failed invasion of the system by "the colony". The humans punished the ant uplifts for their war crimes by de-uplifting them and infecting them with gene engineered glowing mushrooms, the fungus compelled ants to seek out darkness in an attempt to expand the city's biotech lighting system. In time the descendants of humans gave the ants their intelligence back, tensions between the two still remain.
