Jioni grew up in an unknown pride, but settled in the Grasslands when she met Chuma as an adult. They became mates and Jioni soon became pregnant, and near the end of her pregnancy they met a strange lioness named Zira. She seemed oddly fascinated with their little cub, especially hoping it would be a boy. Jioni had a hunch that Zira was up to no good, but she didn't want to assume the worst about her so quickly. Zira's wish came true and Chuma and Jioni did in fact have a boy, who they named Ujazo. And on one tragic night, Zira came and murdered Chuma and Jioni, sparing their newborn cub and taking him with her, renaming him Kovu and setting him up for a destiny not imagined by either of his biological parents.
