Kiara was the middle child of Simba and Nala, as well as their only daughter. She was originally to be leader of the Lion Guard, but after her older brother's "death," she became heir to the throne. She was a playful and adventurous cub, but she was always under her father's watchful eye; he had become extra protective after what happened with Kopa, and even more so after her encounter with Kovu. Kiara was resentful of her lack of freedom, and had no interest in being queen. However, upon talking with her friends Tiifu and Zuri, she came up with a plan that if she acted prim and proper and pretended to want to be queen, then maybe her father would relax a little. Kiara seemed to gain more respect from her father which she liked, and eventually she did come to enjoy the prospect of being queen, but she always felt like she had to act like someone she was not.
When she reunited with Kovu as a young adult, it was the first time in years where she felt like she could revert back to her true self. And when she and Kovu worked to unite the Pridelands, Kiara realized being queen was not about sitting pretty but about bringing peace and justice to the Pridelands. After the war was over, Kiara began to act like herself again, though now she truly appreciated being future queen. She and Kovu eventually became mates and had a cub named Aisha, and later two twins named Chaka and Shani.
Kiara's personalities in TLK2 and TLG are so wildly different, so this is my way of reconciling the two and trying to explain her drastic personality change!
