One thing most everyone knew about Vitani was that she did not want a mate and cubs. Sure, she loved her nieces and nephews, but just couldn't picture herself setting down and starting a family of her own. However, that all changed one day when she and her guard were on patrol and they heard mewing coming from behind a bush. Vitani and the other lionesses went to check it out, and were shocked to find a newborn lion cub laying there helplessly. It was clear he had been abandoned by his parents, so the guard wondered what to do with him. To their surprise, Vitani offered to take the cub herself. But after looking at the cub again, the rest of the guard knew why Vitani had taken such a shining to the little youngster -- he looked just like Vitani's late brother Nuka, who had deserved so much better.
So Vitani took the cub in, and soon the days turned to weeks and eventually months and no parents had come by to claim the cub as theirs. Vitani had named the little cub Nunka -- not exactly her brother's name but similar enough. And soon the lioness who believed she would never have a family, now had a cub of her own to love, and she was happy.
