Have they EVER elected a ruler of the Crystal Empire? Cadance was like -- ooh the crystal princess... That doesn't seem like an election.
It seems like they are more a monarchy thing.
What year was equestria founded is kind of a loaded question also... Would it be 0? Or 1? What year did they start from?
And the three tribes quarrel is quite a deep question... I mean it was more that they didn't trust each other to perform their duties... Although really, I think pissing off the unicorns would have been mostly victimless. What are they gonna do? Not raise the sun? That hurts them just as much as anypony.

Not really. I often wind up entertaining 6-9 year old kids, and they're definitely older than that. Where I live, 6 would be out of preschool and into the start of school- 9 would be well out. In terms of maturity, I'd say they're about 11 or 12, which would be starting highschool. In America the schooling system is different, of course (I live in Australia) so I'll leave it up to you to put the ages in the correct grades.
Besides, we've seen 5 year old fillies in the episode "For Whom The Sweetie Belle Toils" and they're clearly much older than that. They're much bigger in the present-day, and Rarity barely even seems to remember Sweetie's fifth birthday party, let alone consider it recent. At the very youngest I'd say they were 9- but even that's pushing it more than a little.
