Description

"...And after all that, I only cried for twenty minutes!"

-Fluttershy

This must be like dropping a coin into a storm drain, except worse, somehow.
Poor Fluttershy. Went from joy to despair in just five panels.

I had planned to post this comic yesterday, but I was so busy this week that I didn't have the time to put it up until now.
It's mostly because math.
Math is hard.

EDIT: Featured on Equestria Daily, along with "Scootavision" !
Two comics in one post... I'm not sure I've ever seen that happen before, not even to the most famous of fandom artists.

Funnily enough, I had submitted these before, but I thought they were rejected; perhaps they were simply buried in a mass of other submissions.

EDIT: Sequel: "Coin Return"

Move aside peasant, Trixie requires a peanut buttery snack!

Ah . . . how exactly . . . um are you walking on the clouds?

The great and powerful Trixie need not answer such trivial qu . . . *foop* (falls through the clouds)

For some reason I don't feel so bad about loosing my bit now.

The EqD submission system is a strange and mysterious process. I suspect even Sethisto doesn't understand it anymore.

No poor Fluttershy, she lost her bit.

A bit? Falls through the cloud.
Vending Machine? Not.

little known fact: that bit would travel the world untill it would one day be given to applejack as a gift for showing a pony the err in his ways.

I like to imagine that immediately following that last panel, RD tapped her on the shoulder and offered it back to her.

Funnily enough, I had originally planned to have Rainbow star in this comic instead of Fluttershy... until I realized that RD could fly fast enough to grab the coin before it hit the ground.

dude, killer bit

or at least 6 weeks in a hospital
as the bit falls it picks up speed till it becomes a bullet

fun fact - if you dropped a small coin ( a penny) off the top of Canada's CN Tower it WILL kill who ever it hits  (with few exceptions - such as hitting a arm or leg)

The Mythbusters tested this one over a decade ago:

A penny, travelling at terminal velocity, could not reliably break through skin, (Adam even had one shot into his hand).  Even when they ramped things up to about Mach 3 it still wasn't breaking bone, (although Adam wasn't about to put his hand under it).

Pony-kour In reply to tyruvelp [2015-05-02 16:34:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, our coins hit a terminal velocity of 30-50 mph, depending on conditions. Bits are thicker and heavier, though. They could do damage, but still have a terminal velocity.

Malbutorius In reply to tyruvelp [2015-05-02 04:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Nah, it would hit terminal velocity long before it hit the ground.

And then the bit hit a pony in head and killed them.

SpikelyWhiplash In reply to Sturmlion1 [2015-05-01 21:02:08 +0000 UTC]

That's actually a myth.

The mass of a coin is small enough that the upwards air resistance quickly overpowers the coin's gravitational acceleration. At most, it would just sting like the dickens if it struck you in the head.

Pony-kour In reply to SpikelyWhiplash [2015-05-02 01:21:29 +0000 UTC]

Those coins are much thicker than ours; It'd be more like a small rock. If it hit someone's head at terminal velocity, it could conceivably crack a skull. Death is still unlikely, though. This won't be exact, but let's see if I can do this...

V(terminal)= (2mg/(density of air)(Area)(Drag Coefficient))^(1/2)

= (2(let's say 10 cubic centimeters of gold, so .193kg) 9.8/ (1.2) (10 square cm at most, so .001m^2) (I hate Drag coefficient, let's just say .75))^1/2

=64.8m/s, or 145mph. That's a lot faster than the 30-50 mph of a penny, and a lot more mass, too.
