Description This a fan-pic of one of my all time favorite movies growing up, "The Thief and the Cobbler." If you have not seen this movie you are totally missing out.
It is NOT in any shape or form a knock off of Aladin. (I love that movie too )

This was my first time EVER drawing these guys, and I'm very happy with the way they came out.
I don't really know what Tack is doing just sitting there on the golden balls, but the idea just came to me so I went with it. But I think it works.

I thought Tack was the cutest little hero evuh, and the Thief was Hilarious!

When I wanted to draw both Tack and the Thief, I went online for reference, and found out something that shocked me. I'm not sure if I have this story right, so correct me if I'm wrong

Apparently the original animations for this move that took 40 years to make were never finnished, due to lack of funding and impaitence. Disney then tried to lamely finnish it and labled it "The Princesess and the Cobbler" Then someone else labled it "Araibian Knight" and then Mirmax made it "The Thief and the Cobbler" (I think this is the one I saw)
Apparently though, all three versions are nothing compared
to ufinnished original. I saw a little of "Princess and the Cobbler" and thought it was stupid, because in the voice work Tack was narating himself as a much older person, and the Thief was a completly silent character. BOOO!

In the Miramax version Tack is voiced by the guy who voices Simba (forgot his name )so when he narates himself, (in my oppinion) you feel more connected with him, and it feels more like it's HIM talking to you than some faceless narator. Neither Tack or the Thief actaully talk out loud much, but you always know what the Thief is thinking because his thoughts are voiced out loud to the audiance. And they are HILARIOUS. Even though the Thief is not really the heroic type, you can't elp but fall in love with his antics.

Despite all the stuff about the animation not being where it should be, I think this movie really stands out from others out there. Even though it was apparently butchered from what it should have been, both characters have managed to win over our hearts, which something that is hard to say for a lot of movies out there today.
It feels like the art of good story telling and animation are starting to take backseat to better graphics and overdone hype. A lot of movies for children are made with the mindset that "You're gonn'a have to see them, so why bother trying too hard?"
This movie should really be put on DVD and hopefully inspire a whole new generation of future animaters, and story tellers because, God knows we need them now.

OK...That was long....Sorry

Oh my goodness. I love this movie.
When ever I mention The Thief and the Cobbler at school, people stare at me like "what the heck is she talking about?"
Excellent picture, by the way.

Why thank you!
Yeah, I hear you. A lot of people don't know about this movie, or they think it's too trippy. I for one, love this move. Cheesy songs n' all

Yeah. I grew up with the Miramax version (Matthew Broderick is a cool voice for Tack!) and I saw the "Re-Cobbled" version on YouTube last night. And yes; it is rather that Aladdin is a spin-off of this movie, or at least that's what I've heard.

Yes I don't care what everyone else says, out of all the ones that got released the Miramax version is the best. (Yes he was awesome!) ^_^ I haven't seen the "Re-Cobbled" thing on youtube yet...I really should.

Have you ever heard the Japanese kid's song about a Tanuki(racoon-dog)'s golden balls, swing-swing-swinging in the wind...? If you haven't, go look it up (because I sure as heck ain't explainin' it here!), but if you do or just don't care, that's what I thought when I saw Tack sitting on top of those golden balls. XD
Lovely work, I like how you captured the essence of the charecters in their faces, their poses...awsome job!

Its so adorable! I believe you were referring to Matthew Broderick (voiceover of Simba). He has a sweet innocent voice that kind of softens the character. I'd imagine that would be the kind of voice Tack would have, even though he was planned to be silent.

Yes, it was a 40 year project with like four or five different versions. I own a DVD of the movie, the Miramax version. Only a few copies were released a few years ago, and I had to get mine from eBay by a DVD seller. Even so, I adore the movie (I just fast forward through all the pointless singing. I honestly like ONE song, and its when they're in the desert. And the love one I mock all the time when I'm talking about romance or something jokingly. XD)

I believe the whole Disney comparison comes from a story somewhere along the lines of they had a worker who worked on the project in the beginning and also grew impatient with the on and off status of the movie, and so went to Disney, proposed a similar idea storyline wise, and Disney productions worked on it with large dedication. They finished it in three years or so, and this was during the time they were working on their version of the Thief and the Cobbler (or whatever they decided to call it), and then released Aladdin first, which was a huge hit. This then left poor Tack's story hidden in the shadows. Most people consider it an underground movie.

And when it comes to animation, that team that worked on it was far advanced for their time. Compare He-Man animation to this movie. Its ridiculously laughable at how much this movie owns. Animation actually enhanced and progressed because of this movie. Many techniques were used in future animated movies that had come from The Thief and the Cobbler. Every time I watch it, I'm completely amazed. Most everything was hand drawn.

The scene that I absolutely love is the chase, especially when Tack is sliding across the floor and multiple designs are spinning behind him. Imagine the months (and obviously years) it took to make that perfect. *drool*

Why thank ya.

Mathew Broderick! That's his name! Yes I think he pulled the voice of Tack off very well. Same goes for who ever did the Thief. Who ,aside from Tack , was definatly one of the best animated characters of all time.
I always sensed, even as a little kid, that Tack wasn't really ever suposed to talk in the movie because whenever they did show his lips moving, the animation and style looked different. I was absolutly shocked when I later found out how much work went into this movie, and how underground it became. In the end it only made me apreciate it more.
I gott'a find a DVD on Ebay or something!

The songs were okay...I actually like the first song that the princess sang. Dunno why...She's just got a nice voice. And I like the desert song as well. But the love song always drove me crazy. Mostly because it get's stuck in one's head so easily.

I got a friend of mine to watch it one night on You-Tube, and he was very impressed with it as well. His favorite parts were the one's when the palace scenery would change into an optical ilusion. Like when the Thief would sneak around with his back to a striped wall horizontally, then all of the sudden slip through one of the stripes and and continue in a whole new direction. That definatly was creative on the animators' part, and I think it challenged the audiance's sense of perception.

Definitely. And when Tack is going up stairs and Zigzag is going down and you think its the same set of stairs, but Tack walks off on what you think is a wall, and its actually a floor base of the stairs. Clever, clever planning. Or when Tack is chasing after the Thief down the stairs and he runs into a room that you think is a wall design. It's so amazing how many surprises are in that movie. I've tried to show this movie to so many people. The friends I show it to enjoy it, but not as much as me. I think I'm a strange kind of fanatic, just because I hope to be an animator and this is like the Holy Grail to me. XDD

Yes, those scenes made me laugh so hard XD. Especailly when the Thief comments "Who decorated this place?!"

Heck I enjoyed it more than all my friends as well. I've been wanting to either do comics, or animation for quite some time now.

If this movie was ever made into a graphic novel it would...be
...AWESOME. (*_*)

Omg and if you spin the book around the animations would move along with it! XDDD Like when they're sliding down the banister, you spin the book around. That's exciting to think about.
