Description Description in the picture, style taken from the Incredible Cross-sections guides, though this is obviously not a cross-section. I wanted a sleek new fighter for the New Republic / Resistance in the sequels because honestly, it's a bit disappointing that they keep using the same fighter layout decades later and probably would still be wiped out by a TIE Defender any time it shows up. Also, for the future of the Star Wars galaxy, there was the X-83 TwinTail, but that just looks too slow and clunky to me.ย

I would use this in the old Eu. ย Well Iโ€™m still a big XWing fan I would still want new fighters designs.

If one could fit hyperdrive to starfighters, there would be absolutely no need for carrier vessels; one could just spam hyperdrive fighters to whatever location is currently undefended...

Carriers in star wars function as command ships and Mobile bases. After all Starfighters still have cramped cockpits and limited supplies so they need a ship to refuel and re-arm and most importantly get a fresh pilot from.

I think it comes down to fuel. If you can only go a few star systems before your fighter runs out of petrol, you still need a carrier to get you to most places (plus to have a place for the pilots to eat and sleep, for maintenance ...). I think you can even make a point about taking the carrier along to the same star system you're attacking ... in a prolonged battle, you'll need somewhere to return to for refueling, restocking missiles etc. I mean, the rebels did what you describe a lot and it was very effective.

Using the square-cube law, one could get literally millions of starfighters with the same amount of resources it takes to build a single capital ship. A "carrier" in the Star Wars universe should be, at most, a mobile refueling platform hidden in interstellar space. There would also be little reason to use organic pilots, given how "flying is for droids"...

Hmmm, I wonder if there's any faction in the Star Wars, either in canon or in the EU, that fully exploits all the technologies available to the setting to their logical conclusion. Such a faction would utterly dominate everyone else

Well, it got me thinking if resources aren't actually the main cost of ships, i.e. if cutting one big slab of metal for a star destroyer isn't simply easier than cutting a thousand small ones for starfighters or if large reactors are far more efficient per amount of fuel than big ones.

But at that point I think you run into the logical constraints of the Star Wars universe anyway ... The cost of building ships could be offset by droids, and they have droids that can do any job including build more droids and even, as we've seen, plan and be creative, so really, the beings in Star Wars should be living in either a post-scarcity galaxy or in a hellscape that's rapidly running out of resources due to self-reprodrucing droids gone wild ... in any case, something that's rapidly changing and advancing or falling apart. Instead, few things change there even over thousands of years.ย
