Description
TL;DR version: Inspired by earlier deviations along with many other factors, I decided to revisit the Jenasu/XJ-Black concept and do something a bit more unique that helped me to get some practice in for original art while also paying tribute to two of my favorite series.
"So... you must be Jennifer Wakeman..."
This one was really fun to do. So a little while ago I did a deviation showing off XJ-Black AKA Jenasu AKA Jenny Black, a totally ridiculous concept where basically I took Jenny from My Life as a Teenage Robot and gave her the colors of Goku Black. More specifically, I went for colors based around his Super Saiyan Rose transformation since it made things more visually interesting and plus I was inspired by art I saw by Zone (And if you're wondering, yes I mean THAT Zone.) who did a doodle of Jenny going Super Saiyan. After doing that, I then I was doing a little bit of browsing and I happened across a screen-cap of a frame from... well, it's that thing that Zone did which these days sends a chill down the spine of fans of this series. Upon spotting it and the fact it had the black bars to replicate the fact that Teenage Robot was aired in 4:3, I thought back to a deviation I did a long time ago of Jenny encountering and fighting Frieza from the Dragon Ball franchise and then I thought of XJ-Black which made me think about how Jenny's abilities allow her to reconfigure her body parts for various different purposes and well... I decided to do this deviation which is part-trace/edit and part-original drawing which was my choice since I've been a little out-of-practice as far as original drawings were concerned so I wanted to give this a shot.
Now I do want to make a few things clear. First, I know this idea is absolutely ridiculous. XJ-Black as a concept is a thing that can't really happen and there are many factors that contribute to that fact and... I don't care. This is strictly for the purposes of fun and entertainment and is in no way, shape or form meant to be taken seriously. Granted I know the people who read this are most likely going to note that I don't have to explain this which is true... but I've already seen more than enough fanart where sticklers for canon have to be THAT person so I'm just covering my bases.
Next, XJ-Black has a combination of features from both the current Jenny most fans know and the version from the pilot which is why she has the lips as well as why her pigtails are pointing off in opposing directions. That being said, please be aware that when it comes to how I draw things, I am using a mouse and I draw via Paint.net. I am also as I said VERY out-of-practice so if things look off, please forgive me, all I can do is try my best. In fact this is why I went for just a close-up of XJ-Black's head because while originally I was working out how a full body shot would look? I realized with my current skills that the shot would've just looked incredibly awkward so I decided to do the easier shot instead. I am however fully intending on practicing more and more to hopefully do more complex drawings in the future.
Then there's of course, why I went for the style I did in the first place with both characters being in a 4:3 aspect ratio which I don't think anyone is going to ask about but I am going to explain this anyway. Really it comes down to me wanting to do something more unique and also there's the fact that by making the big black bars, there's just not as much drawing that needs to be done because... I mean you have two big black boxes you can hide stuff behind. In other words it's kind of what one would call being... creatively lazy I guess? Granted that sounds like an absolutely terrible explanation but... okay I hope you get the idea.
That being said, I hope you all like this thing.
