Description A commission of 's Halo OC wearing ONI S-1 Recon BDU (concept art version ) and wielding his ancestral greatsword (specifically a German zweihänder) modified (by a Huragok) with Forerunner hard light technology. It's crazy how big these things could be - I mean, this looks like some kind of anime BS, yet it's apparently real. The sword is mainly designed to be used with this mech suit:

I've no idea what that is, though I'm not sure what the person who commissioned this had in mind.

I love the design of the hardlight sword. Imagine facing down a brute or elite with such a weapon. It would be quite an awesome fight!

Woah, an ancestral sword modified to project Hardlight? Now there's a unique idea.

Yeah it was a sweet idea and chronothaur made it look absolutely awesome. I was thinking how could I get hardlight sword before the war is over without breaking Canon. Then I remembered engineers knack for making cool things and well this is the end result basically.

That sword looks badass! Fantastic work. (I think, This type of sword was used to combat pike men.)

Something about greatswords is that in real life is that one hand is on the hilt and the other grabs the blade to guide it, future concepts could include a special glove to no get hurt by the hardlight blade, unless it is more light the hardlight from the bridges and walls that are not meant for cutting.

I considered that the bit of the blade below the 'parrying hooks' could be blunt just for that purpose. Since it's Forerunner magitech, maybe it could even be 'smart' and able to reconfigure itself on the fly, cutting if needed and becoming blunt if the wielder needs to grab the blade. Then again, since the light blade won't weigh anything, it'll also be easier to handle from the hilt alone than a physical sword.

The idea of ONI playing around with hard light technology is really interesting. Could be a good way to counter plasma based knifes and swords from the Covenant.

Oni wasn't playing with with hardlight tech in this case jaeger came across a very curious engineer who modified his blade after seeing him use it.

I saw that in the description, don't worry. I was just suggesting that ONI may be interesting in copying the tech for own reasons.

Btw. I'm a bit confused why an ONI soldier is running around with a sword and especially Zweihänder out of all things. It looks cool and all but it's also huge and really heavy. That may not really be practical in a future where the enemy will shoot at you with plasma projectiles and even if you make it into close combat range, the elites are still bigger, faster and got plasma swords that cut right through the Zweihänder. I can see the hard light version work but as you mentioned, the huragok only modified it after he saw it being used.

Also due to it being a hardlight blade, i imagine it really wouldn't weigh much like it did back when it was made of steel.

arcane37 In reply to Dragunalb [2017-05-16 16:49:01 +0000 UTC]

He keeps it around and he's not a soldier of oni per say. As for the blade, it's usually attached to set a set of powered prototype armor he uses but it can be detached and it can hold up to a plasma sword being a hardlight blade and all. However, Jaeger is smart enough not charge an elite, however, getting the drop on one is a different story and Sonia has used it once or twice in cqc.

To further specify the engineer saw him practicing with it other day and saw how weak it was and that it would never hold up in combat and that his friend would be in grave danger if he attempted to use it in its current state. So he upgraded so he'd stand a chance unaware that jaeger had no intentions on charging into combat with it. Initially, jaeger was pissed so his family blade changed but after some consideration and seeing Sonia use it he had a change of heart and thanked the engineer.

I doubt it'd exactly be a priority, though. Melee combat isn't exactly a huge part of mainstream UNSC combat doctrine; I think Marines and the like would rather take down the huge sword-wielding aliens at a distance than let them get close enough for a melee duel (against a Sangheili an ordinary human is pretty much screwed up close whether they have a hardlight sword or not). I suppose hardlight weapons might find something of a niche with Spartans, though.

Dragunalb In reply to The-Chronothaur [2017-05-16 15:40:15 +0000 UTC]

True, melee combat was never a big thing in the UNSC, apart from the regular combat knife but I can see how it may be a thing for Spartans, since as you said, a regular marine probably won't stand a chance against a trained elite with a sword. A Spartan has a way better chance and with such toys, he can counter a plasma sword without having to steal one first. Still, it's ONI so just for them being curious alone, I can see them playing with the technology in order to get new tech for scalpels or for the use in the steel or mining industry.

Keep in mind m8 the sword is usually attached to the prototype armor so he can use it but it can be detached and carried around like here.

I know; I was just talking about the possibility of swords in mainline UNSC service, where they probably wouldn't be too common.
