Alicornism is a highly rare state/breed of pony that is only ever achieved through one of two ways:
The first way being years of practice and study for a unicorn who is already naturally talented with magic, alicorn-ism is earned through rigorous magical growth and cultivation-and with a little luck. Many unicorns reach the right level and are never able to become alicorns, while others earn it by chance. How or why this mystic transformation happens is unknown, but it is said that it is a blessing placed upon a lucky unicorn who proves themselves to the spirits of other great magical and royal unicorns watching over their progress.
The second way, of course, is through birthright-if an alicorn has an alicorn mother or father or alicorn mother and father. One is more likely to be born an alicorn if both parents are such however, as it's not always a guarantee that the offspring will be an alicorn if only one parent is one. As alicorns are highly rare and powerful, they are often employed as foreign diplomats if they are born within Eponian borders, and are of high interest to the King and Queen to be exemplary examples of their country.
