Description
It's been requested a couple of times, so here it is; a base for the skip animation done by Apple Bloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle. And while everyone is perfectly free to edit it and make their own characters with it, I ask that anyone who uses it do one simple thing...Do not use this to create MLP pixel art (be it of canon or non-canon characters) for profit of any kind.
I know some people are making pony pixel art in exchange for Deviantart Credits and so forth, and that practice is fine. However, I'd like this base to not be used for such things. This was made for free, and its use should be the same way.
With all that said, enjoy

Nope. GIMP has been around for quite a while, and the website for it ( www.gimp.org/ ) is legit.

That skip animation look ridiculous! Watching any four-legged animal try and 'skip' is hilarious!
Can't use it, though.

OK folks, it's GIMP lesson time with your old pal, The Coop!
I've been getting requests and complaints regarding how this base works with GIMP. And since GIMP works differently than the likes of Image Ready and Fireworks, I'm going to tell you, step by step, how to open and edit this in GIMP 2.8. Partly because GIMP really does do a couple of odd things, and partly because I know some people will have trouble getting everything lined back up using a sprite sheet (which is a can of worms I'm sure everyone would rather avoid). So, we're off!
Step 1- Download the pony base to your desktop, or wherever you usually download them to on your computer.
Step 2- Start GIMP.
Step 3- Click "Open...," select the file (in this case, "cmc_skip_base_by_the_coop-d4sqyi9.gif"), and click "Open."
Step 4- You'll see a small window pop up in the work area, which will be hard to work in due to its size. Now find the window on the left side of your screen called "Toolbox - Tool Options," select the "Zoom" tool (it's the magnifying glass icon), and click in the small window where the pony base images are until it's big enough for you to work with.
Step 5- You'll see that there are a lot of images stacked on top of each other. To clean this up, look on the right side of your screen. You'll see a window on it that has a "Layers" tab, with a bunch of eyeball icons stacked on top of each other. Go to that window, and begin clicking on those eyeballs. This will turn off the layers, and clean up the image in your work area. Do this until you reach the final bottom layer (which should be called "Background (50ms)"), and leave the eyeball icon for that layer turned on. Now you've got a work area that's not littered with a bunch of images over top of each other, and that's ready for editing.
Step 6- Select the "Background (50 ms)" layer by clicking once on its name. This will turn that layer a darker shade of gray. This makes it so you can begin editing the image on that layer.
Step 7- Go over to the smaller window on the left side of your screen called "Toolbox - Tool Options" and select the "Pencil" tool (it's the icon that looks like a pencil). If you have trouble finding it, just leave your mouse cursor over the tool images, and the name of it will pop up after a couple of seconds.
Step 8- Select this tool, and change the size to "1" (this option is in a small window below the tools). Now you're all set to begin drawing on the pony to make it look how you want it to.
Step 9- When you have this first image edited to how you want it, go back over to the "Layers" window on the right side of your screen, turn off the eyeball icon for "Background (50ms)," and turn on the eyeball icon for the next layer up, which should be "Frame 2 (50ms) (replace)." Click on that layer's name so it becomes the same darker gray as before, and then you can begin editing that image.
Step 10- Just keep repeating from the end of Step 5 to Step 9, working your way up through all of the layers until you've edited them all, and are happy with how they look.
Step 11- In the window you've been editing the images, along the top, select "File," and then "Export."
Step 12- Change the name to whatever you want it to be, click the "Desktop" button, and then click "Export." Put a check in the small box next to "As Animation," and makes sure "Loop Forever" has a check mark as well. In the box where it says "I don't care," select "One frame per layer (replace)," and put a check next to "Use disposal entered above for all frames."
Step 13- Click "Export," and then you're done. Go to your desktop and view your finished gif that animates properly.
And there you go. That's how to edit this pony base in GIMP 2.8. Gimp's not as intuitive as Image Ready, or even Fireworks, but it gets the job done pretty well for a free program. You just have to get used to its quirks. Hopes this helps everyone, and sorry for any typos

Are you talking about the image that appears just to the right of the eyeball if you click there, or are you saying that there's a magnifying glass where the eyeball is supposed to be?

Not sure which one you're referring to, so I'll cover both. To download GIMP, go here...
www.gimp.org/downloads/
To download the pony base, just right click with your mouse on the animating pony, and then select "Save Image As..." from the menu that appears.

I'm not familiar with paint.net, but it'll open fine in GIMP 2.

Afraid not. However, you can easily use this base if you open the gif in a program like Fireworks, Image Ready (which came with Photoshop CS2 and earlier versions), or Photoshop CS5-CS6 (it's in CS4 too, in a weird way... you have to import the gif as "Video Frames to Layers"), and then edit the gif directly in there. Plus, each frame will already be aligned properly for you from the start, so you won't have to put them all in place yourself (which can be a real pain), and you can go back and forth more easily between frames to make sure it looks good in motion, while you're making it.

Thanks for making this! Super cute.

The originals from the show that I shrunk down? Not anymore. I deleted them once I was done with this base, since I didn't need them anymore.
If you're talking about the base gif I posted here, just open it in any animated gif editor like ImageReady, Fireworks, and others. Then you can see all the frames and edit them right in the program (I use ImageReady 9, which is a part of Photoshop CS2, myself).

What program are you trying to open the gif in, and which version of that program? I ask that last part because Photoshop CS3 and newer made opening up animated gifs a little more complicated if you want to see all the frames.
