Trepanning

Note: Trepanning is a real procedure

On January 6th, 1965, Dr. Bart Huges, convinced that he had found a permanent method to expand his consciousness, performed an operation on himself called "trepanning." Trepanning is the act of boring a circular hole in the skull with a trephine, a hand-operated circular saw made specifically for this purpose. While it does have specific and legitimate medical use, Dr. Huges' intention was purely to reach a higher state of consciousness. Having searched for over two years for a doctor to perform this procedure on him, with no takers, Dr. Huges performed it upon himself. Not only did he live, ten days later he went public at what he called as a "happening," at which time he removed his bandages and opened himself up for examination. Seven days later he gave a press conference. The following day he was institutionalized.

Dr. Huges feels the "operation" was successful, and refers to the permanent hole in his skull as his "third eye," probably as much for the reference to the mystical third eye which can see beyond this mortal world as to the fact that the Dr. physically has an additional opening in his skull, similar to an eye socket.

There are people in our society today who are still attracted to Dr. Huges' theories of expanded consciousness and there have been more than a few who have followed his path, some with fatal results (it's supposed to make you feel high at all times).

In 1987, a girl from my High School, Denise Fetzer, died of sepsis as a result of a trepanning incident (the only case in NY). She performed this act the first night that her parents were gone on a two-week trip to Mexico. She was originally scheduled to go with them, but feigned illness so that she could perform the trepanning and have time to recover while her parents were away (real trepanning is performed by opening a flap in the skin, the final hole in the skull in not noticeable - all she would have had to explain was a cut by her hairline). While she was found dead in her home on her bedroom floor, the papers reported that the coroner indicated the trepanning did not kill her. Either the pain, or shock, or both affected her to the point where she collapsed on the floor. She was still alive but too weak or disoriented to seek help. The assumption was that a rapid sepsis developed due to improperly cleaned instruments and indications were that it took her about nine days to die. Since she was supposed to be on the trip (and the school was notified to such an extent) there was nobody that even tried to look for her. Her parents had called and had grown concerned that there was continually no answer, but Denise had a bit of a history as a 'bad girl.' The parents were upset, but never expected what happened. Her mother located her by the smell in the house upon their return. Denise's boyfriend, Ronald Barr, wound up hanging himself from the backstop behind home plate on the high school baseball field about a month later. The note he left actually referenced the fact that the two originally had a suicide pact though he said Denise hadn't intended to kill herself with the trepanning (he knew she talked about it but he thought she was on the trip as well). Interestingly, Denise's brother died the next year after drunkenly skiing head first into a tree on a school ski trip. Also interesting, they removed the backstop from the ball field at school and it hasn't been replaced to this day – just weird stuff...

The whole incident has always stuck in my head. Maybe this deviation will help me get it out...

you are a great story teller. Are all of these stories real? I mean, I've heard of this procedure before. They've been doing it since the Roman days I think is what I heard on the History Channel... and I've heard about these suicide pacts.... it's just so weird. The world is so messed up

Thanks! Yeah, trepanning, the pact, john pius - there are a couple of good stories in there, check the rest (a face in the ground, held under, etc...)

Wow you know out of all the counciesness stories of people trying to attain a higher level this is the BEST, and one I have yet to hear suprisingly. I don't comment on people's works cuz I really don't think anyone cares, and would much rather have the fav, I'm sure you agree... but I had to let you know this was very informing and I enjoyed starring at it, it's now my background. Very nice work... trying to get through your whole gallery now.

dude, thats such a brilliant story, see all the things that happened at my old school were about sex or drugs, the only people that had the balls to kill themselves werent people I knew at the time.
death holds so much more interest for me than sex I think, I mean dont get me wrong, bring on the chocolae covered lesbians, but it doesn't have any of the mistique of death, and death, if its suicide, it sort of the ultimate statement to the world, plus its the most agressive act you can ever take, and Im sure there is an arguement for creation through destruction in there but that would involve me thinking so I cant be arsed.

great manip tho.

The-Corpse In reply to neb8neb [2004-06-02 03:20:27 +0000 UTC]

It's funny, suicide holds such a 'romantic' or heroic import for some people (a la Romeo & Juliet, etc), but if you think about the realities of death (messy, rotten, and horrific) it's really about the nastiest thing out there. If all these displaced goth kids ever got a 'real' look at death, up close, I think the majority of them would put back on their dockers and polo shirts and head straight out to the Gap. (hmmm... I think I sense a journal entry...)

Any chance at some point you could write up some tutorials on how you make these type of images, as they are pretty damn realistic.
