Description Did these today and thought I'd share. Stop reading now if you have no interest in learning my workflow.

Okay! So these are development sketches for one of my characters, Theodore. I very recently got his face and hair right, so now it was time to get his body size and shape right — you know, once and for all so I can redraw him consistently in the future.

The drawings are numbered in the order in which they were drawn. Numbers 1-5 appear as they were on the A4 page I was working on, while number 6 was drawn on the next page. They're all in proportion to each other, too.

PROCESS:

1. I draw Theodore's upper body freestyle, correcting bits and pieces until he looks right — like how I see him in my head. I knew from the start I wanted him to be broad-shouldered and tall, but not muscular. (I often base parts of my characters on people I know, and in this case his upper body is based on a particularly tall friend of mine, so my eye recognizes it when I get it right. )

2. Now I draw his body freestyle. I do my best to use basic shapes, in this case triangles and rectangles. I make sure to draw his hair every time, too, since the bush on his head will make his body appear smaller.

3. I test his shoulder width to the extreme just in case. I find that a three-head shoulder width looks too far-fetched.

4. I try a two-head shoulder width and it looks good rough. I also play around with his overall height, but nothing too serious yet. The shoulders are what I want to get right first and foremost.

5. In a more refined sketch, I see two-head shoulder width only just misses the mark. I do, however, establish that he looks great with a 7-head height and a waist the width of his head.

6. Finally I settle on placing his shoulders at the three-quarter mark on either side of his head. You'll see that here his shoulders are only slightly wider than on number 1, and I wanted to push his shoulder width as far as I could, so I'm happy.

This is as far as I'll go in terms of making a reference sheet for this character. I can now rest assured that as long as I keep these drawings safe, I can always come back and redraw Theodore for many years to come.

Crits, Comments and Questions are more than welcome!

Don't even worry about it. We've all had keyboard troubles. I really hope you get it sorted out soon!!!!

But that makes the fact you even commented so much more precious!! Thanks for taking the time to type and copy/paste and everything!

And yeppers! I'm on YouTube! Link's on my Profile page. I wanna make more tutorials but I'm still sort of crashing after my exam finals. I feel like such a lump.

Thanks again!

Wow this is really helpful seeing your process! It makes sense that to be able to draw a character over and over you have to not only get their face right but also their body proportions.

I like the personality he has in these sketches. His smirk and his eyes and his slightly thick, expressive eyebrows give him this great combination of kinda and friendly boyish charm (the eyes, and the shapes of his face, too, I suppose) with a hint of rougish cool-ness (largely from his smirk, but also from the confident and relaxed way he stands in sketch #6)

Drawing guys' figures without exaggerating how broad their shoulders are in comparion to their waist is a challenge for me; if I don't make them look like Superman I tend to end up with too block, boring figures. But I like how you balanced his figure in the standing pose. Like I said, he looks very relaxed and natural, and I like how he came out.

Great sketches. It's also fun to get a glimpse into your process. : )
