did you trace over every part of her body, or did you use some sort of filter?

Neither: You just draw the shapes; add more shapes and shades and so on.

Vector art isn't a trick; it's a whole different medium

Thanks, I look forward to working with illustrator more. But for now I loathe the pen tool.
