Description I meant to do this awhile ago but...I don't know...had a case of the lazy's. It was looking at pics of the new Superman outfit that got me thinking about it again.

This is just a sampling of outfits he's had over the years. He's had so many that this strip could've gone on for metres. So I just kinda stuck to his main outfit. His main superheroing outfit, not the one-off suits of armour or special Kryptonian robes or what-have-you.

It was hard to know how to depict his first couple of outfits. They changed from issue to issue. Especially that first one. Sometimes he had boots, sometimes he had Greek sandals, sometimes he didn't have a belt. So I just kinda did an approximation.

Really I could've left that black outfit out. I guess technically it wasn't a superheroing outfit. It was what he wore when he returned from the 'dead'...but that was such a huge moment that I felt like that warrented including it.

And I even included the new suit of armour thing he's going to be wearing. Yeah...how about that outfit.

Ahahahaha, it's so strange to be saying this, but the ones on the left just somehow look like he's getting younger as he goes--which probably fits how the art style's been moving, hahah, but still. That and watching that one damn swirlicue of hair work its way around. xD

I think a lot of characters have been drawn younger over the years. They go through phases. They'll look older, then younger, then older, then younger... I think it probably has to do with art styles too. Some people just naturally make people look older.

HIIII SUPERMAN All of these designs, wow. Yeah, I can imagine how you'd have trouble for the first few designs, considering how often the designs changed back then. I've never seen some of these before. As for the newest redesign from the reboot . . . eh. T:

But all the details are great! And I LOVE how you did the background.

Thanks. Those early designs really did change a lot. I mean...from issue to issue he looked different! It was all being done by the same artist too.

greek sandals? what, did he borrow them from WW?

i have a love/hate relationship with supes i think. some days i find him overpowered and pretentious, other days he's just the sweetest thing and i want to feed him cookies and ruffle his hair forever like movie captain america. this here is an example of supermans i want to cuddle .3. though that vey first one looks a bit judgey to me, with that squinty expression XD stop judging me, man! you don't know me! the second one looks downright swanky, though. he'd look right at home in a 007 suit many lols to the supermullet

i must say, the belt on that reboot one looks a bit like it has bat ears

The-G In reply to Dakt37 [2011-09-30 06:16:08 +0000 UTC]

Well technically...those issues where his look kept changing ended up being Earth 2. So I guess Superman as we know him didn't wear Greek sandals. The Earth 2 Superman did. In fact, he changed his look a lot. I don't think Shuster had any reference pics. I don't think he even looked back at stuff he'd drawn. He just designed Superman everytime he drew him. I personally think he borrowed them from Hercules. Or maybe punched him and stole them.

You probably won't like reboot Superman then. His pretentious dial has been turned WAY up. His new attitude is "Awwwwwwwwwww yeah. I'm Superman and you all can't do shit to stop me." I much prefer the Superman that flies home to the farm for Christmas and sneaks out to look at the presents. The first one is very judgey. That's when Superman (from Earth 2) had made himself judge and jury. Had to put in the Supermullet! HAD TO! I even wanted to draw Clark Kent with that ponytail he had.

It does, doesn't it. I'm thinking it could be a friendship buckle. Batman is gonna wear an S shield on his belt.

That cuts pretty close to the truth for some of those really early comics. That was awesome.

The thing at the end was interesting too. About how they were pitching a young Lois Lane series.

He probably does. In the Superman: Doomsday movie he apparently has bathrobes in his fortress. So I guess he has full bathroom facilities...which would mean closets and curlers. I think he should dress his Superman robots in all his different outfits. That way they can all be worn at the same time!

Thanks.

Armor? I am now confused. Why would he possibly need armor? And what's with those red and blue outfit thingies? It looks like he was split in two or something. Some kinda twins-with-powers thing.

Wait. Does this have anything to do with red kryptonite?

Anyway. More chibis in various costumes! You're so good at these, DC should be paying you to make them. And then they should be selling buttons and such with the chibis on them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to DragonsLover1 [2011-08-28 08:42:15 +0000 UTC]

That's the question a lot of nerds have been asking. He's Superman. Why does he need armour? There's been no answer for it. Maybe it collects solar radiation or something. I guess if it's armour it won't tear like his tights do now. He WAS split in two. He turned into living blue energy and they made him that suit to contain him and his energy. Then he split into two and there was a blue version and a red version.

No, no red kryptonite. In the comics, red kryptonite takes away his powers.

I think DC should pay me to do a chibi comic. It could just be called DC Universe and each issue would be whatever I felt like drawing. One issue could be a chibi Batman story then the next issue might be a chibi Green Arrow story. I think that maybe if I was going to set up a table at a convention I would probably just draw chibis. Maybe make some buttons or keychains or something.

DragonsLover1 In reply to The-G [2011-08-29 03:15:34 +0000 UTC]

Maybe. That would make sense. Wear sturdier clothes so they won't tear apart every time he jumps to supersonic.

So my initial thought was right, he was split apart. In Smallville I don't remember if the Red Kryptonite took away the powers (I never saw a full episode that had it) but I do recall that it made him very. . .uninhibited. So I was never too sure what it did, all in all.

That sounds like a not-so-bad idea. You won't "work" in a way that could endanger you in whatever-it-does-to-you ways so your doc can't get mad, AND you'd be doing things you enjoy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to DragonsLover1 [2011-08-29 07:49:39 +0000 UTC]

Well his tights never ripped apart when he flew fast. It was just when he got into fights. When he got punched around he get tears and rips. Though now you mention it...why did punches rip the tights but flying at supersonic speeds didn't?

Yeah, in Smallville the red kryptonite took away his inhibitions. I think in Smallville the black kryptonite took away his powers. I can't remember now. I know they used it to do different things so maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Look at you...taking my condition into consideration. That's nice. Even I wasn't thinking about that stuff.

DragonsLover1 In reply to The-G [2011-08-29 08:29:43 +0000 UTC]

I was exaggerating and stuff. I do that. A lot. But yes I DID raise an interesting question. Like why do Hulk's pants never fall all the way off?

I don't remember any black kryptonite. . .but then I didn't watch the show beyond like third season.

I don't even know what your condition is. . . .Yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to DragonsLover1 [2011-08-29 10:49:11 +0000 UTC]

Because if they did then all his comics would have to be rated R. Or maybe even X.

Yeah it didn't appear until later. Can't remember when exactly. Maybe fourth season. Probably fifth.

DragonsLover1 In reply to The-G [2011-08-30 16:55:43 +0000 UTC]

Nah, just fat guys. But that's an illusion. The fat gathers around the pelvis and bunches up, so it hides the true size. Muscley guys have whatever random size they were gifted with without the hidden parts.

It's just that muscley guys are sometimes muscley due to low self-esteem. Hulk doesn't really have that problem.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-G In reply to DragonsLover1 [2011-09-03 20:37:41 +0000 UTC]

I like that you used the word 'gifted'. Like all muscley guys have large wangs...or that it's just a gift to have a penis.

Hulk doesn't really have a choice. He didn't get to pick how he looked. The gamma radiation did.

SUPERMANS
Augh, gotta love that Reeves Superman, pfft.
And everyone knows the best Supes costume will always and forever be #3. No matter who reboots what and who revamps who.

Man, fuck that armor outfit. I don't even want to talk about it.
Okay, yes I do. What are they trying to do by adding more lines and armor? Are they trying to make Superman's ridiculous costume seem more feasible or mature? Because all it's fucking doing is making him look MORE ridiculous. (and don't even get me fucking STARTED on the Action Comics #1 outfit, holy fuck.) Nearly the whole point of superheroes is to have strong people dressed in silly costumes fighting crime like it ain't no thing. If you try to make it serious, if you TRY to be cool, it ruins the whole thing and it comes out worse!! Keep the silly spandex and booties, god damn it.

The-G In reply to FastPuck [2011-08-27 04:46:55 +0000 UTC]

Damn straight! If Christopher Reeve didn't wear it then it's not the proper Superman outfit. I think most people who appreciate Superman would agree with that. Well...maybe not in the way that I put it, but it would be similar.

People can't look at that armour without wanting to rant. It took a lot to stop myself from writing a 50 paragraph rant about it. They're totally trying to make him look more appropriate. This is all about getting new readers and they're thinking that underpants on the outside isn't going to bring in new readers. The thing that strikes me is...why does Superman need to wear armour? Are they planning to drastically depower him or something? If not...why the fuck does he need to wear armour? It mostly seems like Jim Lee just wanted to wank off on the page. "Look at me draw heaps of unnecessary lines on an outfit!" When I saw the outfit for Action Comics I was flabbergasted and horrified. But then they said that Action Comics is going to be an origin story. It'll be about him deciding what he wants to do with his powers and revealing himself to the world. After I read that I understood it more. He's got that farmboy look with a thrown-together costume.

The whole point of this reboot is to appeal to non-comic book readers. They're trying to redesign the characters to appeal to a different section society. One not concerned with continuity and history. The new Justice League comic is the most ordered comic all year so it looks like these new looks are here to stay.
