Description Note: this is a HUGE picture. Download to see it full size.

The third of my promised tutorials: how to rehair a pony. This is how I finish a pony that will have hair, specifically using nylon pony hair. There are also rehairing tools you can use, but this way is cheap, easy, and versatile. You can use pretty much anything to hair a pony, but if you'd like to use the stuff I did here (and use on most my ponies), you can buy it from the same place I do here: [link]

If you want a tutorial on a specific aspect of customizing, please ask! I'll be hitting the major points (Bait prep, full body repaint, symbol painting, eye painting, rehairing), but anything else will only be posted if requested. Enjoy!

I really wanna do this, but

1. I'm not very good at this kind of stuff and it would just end up looking weird.

2. The ponies look creepy with no headsΒ

I'm just curious, but instead of knotting the hair to make plugs, could you just use a bit of liquid glue? I kinda can't knot stuff to save my life.

Would you also know a good place to buy bait ponies that aren't too expensive?

Thank you so much for making this tutorial! I've been interested in making custom ponies of my characters. I'm wondering, what type of paint do you use or is good to use for custom ponies.

Can this work with G4 MLPs? I want to do a G4 custom using this tutorial. (Just making sure before I start so I don't ruin the toy I'm working on...)

How many hanks of hair do you recommend for the G4 ponies to completely redo the mane and tail (assuming they will be the same color throughout)?

I am wondering, can this tutorial also apply for the Generation 4 MLP figurines. Cause I was thinking of modifying a Rarity into my ponysona Tea Rose.

thanks to your great tutorial,
I've rehaired my pony and everything

but how exactly do I get the
head back on now, do I just
push and squeeze until the
neck ring goes through the hole?

I have no idea how to take my ponys head off without hurting it, at it seems to be superglued on. I made my first custom pony (baneling) without taking the head off at all. It worked since all I used was clay but I want to add hair to the next one. can you show me how to decapitate my pony properly

I have another tutorial up in my gallery about bait prep, where I show how to carefully cut the head off. I've also heard you can fully loosen the glue by dunking the pony in boiling water.

AAWWW THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! >w<

I was having a hard time figuring how to rehair a pony! Doll nylon hair is a bit difficult to find where I live, but there's a nice substitute which is used to make wigs and real hair extensions. It's a little bit thicker than doll hair, but still has a smooth touch to it. And you can always find white strands, so I don't think I'll have it so difficult to dye in case I can't find the color I want. ^^u

THANK YOU! I use thi smethod myself for MLP and doll rehairing annd whenever I try to explain it to people who ask I think I confuse them, so this is a very nice visual. Thank you so much!

Um I've been working on rehairing, and my wire often snaps when I try to pull it through the hole and the hair kind of splits, is that normal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Lancastrian In reply to Kino-Ink [2011-01-16 02:17:21 +0000 UTC]

The wire will break occasionally as it wears out, but if that happens a lot it means you're trying to pull too much hair through the hole.

Kino-Ink In reply to The-Lancastrian [2011-01-16 04:00:04 +0000 UTC]

It's a good thing I bought two hanks of each color I ordered, if I screw up I have back ups lol.

The-Lancastrian In reply to Kino-Ink [2011-01-17 02:16:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure you'll figure it out. I can eyeball holes and know how much hair will fit through them now, but I broke a lot of wire in learning that!

Out of all the (not so many) MLP rehairing tutorials I've managed to find, this is the best. Now I can finally give new life to the decapitated ponies on my craft table!

I'm glad you found it helpful! If you need a tutorial on how to make hair plugs out of shorter hair/hair taken off of store bought ponies, I can do that too.
