Whew boy, this one was a doozy, but I enjoyed it all the same ^^ This is my entry to August 08's Monthly Gargoyles Contest , the theme being China. As soon as I found that out, I immediately thought of two things: the Xanadu Clan of Gargoyles and my favorite manga, Petshop of Horrors which takes place in a Chinatown and stars the beautiful Chinese owner of the shop, Count D. If you've never heard of this series, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a wonderful manga that deals with the Count trying to make love, dreams, hope and happiness a reality for his clientele. But whenever you buy a pet from this shop, you must always adhere to the sales terms because if not, only death...or worse awaits For the sake of this picture, I changed Count D to Count G ('G' for Gargoyle) Yeeeaaah...

Now for those of you that are lucky enough to be PSoH fans already, you know that Q-chan (the cute lil' bat-devil-duck-rabbit pet of D's) is actually his grandfather, Sofu D. The main subject of this picture is not D, but his golden-eyed grandfather, despite the similarites (runs in the family). I incorporated Q-chan's colors the best that I could into Sofu D's Gargoyle skin and wing colors ^_^

I chose Sofu D as my subject because he's the one who travels all around searching for more 'merchandise' for his shop. I also thought about what Greg Weisman (the Gargoyles creator) said about how Brooklyn will acquire his own Gargoyle beast. Just to let you know, a Gargoyle Beast is like Bronx, an intelligant almost dog-like species of Gargoyle. Anywho, according to Mr. Weisman, Brooklyn is whisked away by the Phoenix Gate to ancient Xanadu, China where he meets a clan of dragon-like Gargoyles who have made it a personal mission to save the endangered Gargoyle beast species. I started thinking about the Counts of PSoH and how they're like regal caretakers of the world's most rarest of species (mermaids, dragons, kitsunes, kappas, etc.). So what if Sofu D was in charge of preserving the Gargoyle beasts? What if Brooklyn actually got his Fu Dog from the Count's shop?

In the picture, I have D holding the puppy version of Fu Dog who in the future, will become a loyal companion to Brooklyn. Before I actually drew Fu, I actually had a dream of a behemoth Fu Dog chasing me and trying to play w/ me XD But I also remember in my dream while I was trying to dodge the Dog's monstrous paws, I kept trying to get a good-scaled view of his face and features. I believe in my subconscious, I wanted to get as many intricate details from the dream as I could so that I could incorporate them into the Fu Dog for my picture On the top left of this picture, I have the beloved T-chan; he's a totetsu (or taotie) , "a man-eating beast that roamed ancient China" and on the top right, we have of course an Eastern dragon. I chose these creatures because they have Gargoyle-like qualities and are seen decorating the structures of Asia like guardians I would've really liked to create a more oriental-like frame and work some more on D's hair, but again, I was at a crunch for time. This is another one of those pieces that I'll probably go back and edit, but just for the frame because I'm pretty happy with the way this came out

I plan on creating a mini Petshop of Horrors x Gargoyles comic, introducing my version of how Brooklyn acquires Fu Dog and his encounters with the beautiful Count when he arrives in ancient china. Poor Brooklyn...if he only knew

All in all, I had a lot of fun connecting my two favorite fandoms together and creating this piece Hope you all like the end result!
