Hell On The Border30 x 24"

Hell On The Border became the nickname for the original jail in Fort Smith, Arkansas. While visiting such a hospitable state, it is hard to think that crime once flourished in this gateway to the West. Among warring Indian tribes, searching settlers, and wild-west outlaws, Western Arkansas was home to years of violence. As a result, it also became home to "Hanging Judge Parker" who sentenced more people to death than any other judge in the U.S.
With crime under control, and a new jail to take its place, an unnatural stillness fills Hell on the Border, today. Shadows and memories emerge from the gallows nearby, and locals tell of a past that is certainly not meant to be forgotten.
Throughout the entire week in Arkansas, my mind wouldn't forget the sights and sounds of Fort Smith's fierce history. Thoughts of the people who passed over that land before me were invaded with questions about those who never left. Arkansas proved to be a remarkable place full of generous people and incredible natural beauty. From legendary tales of Fort Smith to luxurious retreats in Hot Springs, Arkansas humbly awoke my mind. I can only hope that this painting will do the same for those who view it.
