Description Symbolic to July 8,1853 - When Commodore Matthew Perry opened trade with Japan by docking four "black ships" in Edo Bay to negotiate a treaty. Ironically, the treaty was not really negotiable, which is why a "Tsuru" or crane delicately floats below a towering steam ship. It is now a national symbol of peace.

Brilliant picture.

I've read up on Japanese history and in particular the time when Westerners forced trade on them with these ships.

I can't imagine what it must have been like for the Japanese villagers on the coast at the time.

Going to the docks to ready their fishing boats, when suddenly, out of the morning mist, comes this massive black ship. With size and weapons the likes of which they'd never seen before.

To them it must have been the most shocking and alien thing to have ever happened.

Like if we woke up one morning and suddenly found that alien spaceships had landed in our back yards.

Great analogy since there is little left in our world that we have to be exposed to at least visually!
