Description
Hey hey! Remember my journal entry from a few weeks back? This is that super secret side project I'd been working on that I had mentioned.
Let's take a second for me to explain first.
Waaaaaaaaaay back in Year 7, back during my pre-highschool years, a school mate and I had come up with human designs representing the planets of our Solar System. It was just something we'd done to waste time really. Over the course of those following years however, those designs had changed as inspiration for them came and went within me. I honestly believe they went through at least 5 distinct iterations, changing in both design and style; from Wind Waker-esque, to Hetalia, to cartoonish, and back. Finally, about a few months ago (around about when I took that unannounced hiatus, let's call it) I sat down and decided to finally flesh out the idea properly. So I spent that time working on them, and this is a culmination of those many hours spent.
So let's offer some descriptions why don't we? Because what's a face without some personality behind it, eh?
Mercury; the Athlete.
The guy that's always on the move and doing things. Being a productive member of society. He loves sports, music and puzzle games. He's got a bit of a temper, but is a general cool customer and likes to go with the flow, always ready for the next fun event to present itself. He also the guy you want around in a bind. The type of guy who'll, when you're running from the cops on a drunken bender, will take the situation by its reigns and lead it back home, safe and sound... relatively. Okay, so maybe he doesn't actually enjoy doing it, but friends are friends, and he'll put up with it for the sake of the experience.
Venus; the Sass.
And boy, does she know it. She lives her life as bluntly as possible, and with no hesitation. She's to the point, and swims very much against the current. And do you know why? Because she don't give a fuck what you think; and that goes for both sides of any argument. If you think you or your opinion is better than hers, she will break down your best shots with a cutting remark and a gorgeous smirk. She cherishes no one more than her self-proclaimed sister Earth and the two are BFFs until the end of days.
Earth; the Everything.
Basically the star of this whole show and dance. This woman embodies all things good in the world. Kittens and rainbows, and environmentalism, and equality, and religion, and science, and freedom, and empathy, and human rights; all of it. She's creative and wild, a bit childish and scatter-brained as well. But she's also calculating and pretty damn knowledgeable at that. Of course, when you have an entire industrialized civilization of dust mites crawling all over you, you tend to pick up some bad habits like smoking, and a mixed moral message, that tries it's hardest to be equal and fair, but dammit, it's just so hard to distinguish right from wrong sometimes (uuuugh.)
Mars; the Badass
You know that uncle that always brought you the coolest presents for Christmas, and had something neat to show you, and also told the best stories from when he was a kid? Yeah, that's Mars. He served time in a war, and the dude has the scars to prove it. He may be beaten, but his optimism stayed with him, and loves to partake in his favorite hobby and "retirement job"; archeology. That being said, he's got a cold shoulder for aliens and conspiracies, so whatever you do don't remind him of the Martian movies and the little green alien people, or that thing that looks like a face on that one mole on his back. He flips over that, and definitely doesn't take kindly. Earth sees her 'Uncle Marty' as one of the smartest people she knows, and to him, she's his little princess.
Ceres; the KICKass
Don't cross her. If you know what is good for you, dear god DO NOT CROSS HER. She has no patience for you. Hell, she barely wants to be on Earth, but it's not like the empty void of rocks and nothingness would be any more interesting. She has no will or purpose, which definitely seeps into how she lives (like a homeless slob) and hates socialising with people. The only thing she puts any effort into is her training in Judo. She's a black belt and certain deserves it. In fact, she's a pretty good technician when it comes to skill and combat. Of course, the catch is, she's gone out of her way to fashion knuckleduster out of pure diamond. Yeah, she's no noble fighter. Just... don't let her near your important parts, she WILL take the low blow.
Jupiter; the Big Guy
How else can you describe him but grand? He's got an imposing stature of 6'4", he's worked as a bouncer and bodyguard for many years, and he most recently enjoys the big life, living it up on-stage in plays and other productions. He's also got a big attitude about himself. Egotistical, not really, but he's just enough there to be annoying. He's bombastic and wants to be the center of attention. Parties and mingling with younger ladies are his forte, and despite his aged appearance, the guy can sure tear it up. He's also got a taste for the old-fashioned, so his views on certain topics might be a little... outdated. His closes acquaintances are Saturn, a fellow star, and Mars, a fellow soldier and current gatekeepers of the asteroid belt.
Saturn; the Mother
She's the type of woman who is willing to offer an ear to listen to your problems, and give you good world advice. She's prides herself on being a good judge of character and is always great and bringing conflict to a peaceful end. Despite being a fashion model and the cover image of many a successful fashion magazine, she's far more modest than she appears - she just leaves that to Jupiter. She's a natural when it comes to conversation and social interaction, and loves to sit down and spin a conversation for hours. She's also quite the activist, using her fame and notoriety to bring aid to poorer countries and the planet Earth; she's a botanist and agriculturalist outside of fashion.
Uranus; the Awkward-y-ness
Poor shy Uranus is always the one being made fun of. She can't help it of course. She's just... a little more different than other people. She enjoys watching water trickle from a faucet, and making macaroni and seashell art. Her furniture hangs at bizarre angles and she sleeps in her bed upside down. She's just more comfortable that way, and she's really self-conscious about it. She's horrible at meeting new people or even keeping the conversation she's having about a relatable subject. She perpetually goofs simple tasks and has no confidence in herself for it. If there's anything she thinks she's good at, it's keeping her 'brother' Neptune out of trouble, because he is a handful. But maybe she's just the right fit for that job.
Neptune; the Energy
This dude has his dials set to max at all times. He's a handful to say the least. He enjoys living life to its fullest, and has little time for those who take it slow, which unfortunately, is most of everyone. His big ego and personality often get in the way of him making friends easily, and he acts on impulse, meaning he can be a bit blunt and direct in conversation; speaking his thoughts before the filter in his head can look it over. Only a moon like Triton would be able to handle him (A moon that, for the record, revolves in the opposite direction to Neptune's other moons, and is thought to have 'bowled' into them, obliterating them into the tiny ones Neptune has today) He loves partying and always seeks thrills, much to his sister's horror, but he always puts his sister before himself. He'll always find time to do the things Uranus wants to do. He's also a bit of the 'protective big bro,' and will be cross if you do anything to harm her.
Pluto; the Little Big Bad
What can you say but cold and distant? Well, handsome, dark and fun to annoy, probably. Pluto was banished from the group of Major planets about a decade ago, and ever since has had great resentment against them all. His life goal is to over throw the other planets and prove his right to planethood. When he's not plotting world domination, he's being a loner in his massively luxurious mansion. He has a penchant for the posh, and does everything in his power to maintain an image of near royalty. He has a short temper, made even shorter by his partner in crime, Dwarf Planet Ceres, and is known for bouts of extreme rage. While it can be fun to poke at his buttons, he can be extremely hostile and disturbingly violent if pushed to it, given his pessimistic world view and anger issues. While this is all true, he can be kind in his own curmudgeony way. He even still has a pseudo friendship with Earth (that nearly ended after he was disbanded being a Planet), and the two have mutual respect for the other, and the last thing Pluto wants to do is irreparably harm them. Too bad someone's pulling the strings behind this bad boy, and making him do just that, huh? Haha!

I'm FINALLY getting my lazy arse into commenting on this.
....
Shiet. What else is there to say? Your designs are perfect, your colours are perfect, your little bios are perfect.
EVERYTHING IS PERFECT AND JUST RIGHT
All your hard work certainly paid off, and from what I can see in the comments section, everyone loves these guys.
I hope to see more potential doodles of your humanized planets in the future, especially that one who's 'pulling the strings' on Pluto's actions.

Told you once and I'll tell ye again; I absolutely love these guys. I love all the little quirks and nods to their planetary behaviours in their descriptions. I have to say, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus are my favorites. I love how Earth is basically a big "take that" at tumblr and poking fun at the somewhat misguided attempts at being overly progressive. I wonder who is pulling the strings behind the Pluto-man. He's a grumpy, very short little twat. I relate to him too much.
yeah, even though it's been like, 3/2 months now? I'm still amazed with all of these designs every time I see them. Now I have a quick way to access this. Stellar job (hah, no pun intended, or maybe) on these guys, once again!

I don't know why, but I feel like listening to some of Gustav Holst's work right now... And Bananarama... Joke aside, I love what you have done with them : they all have awesome designs and personalities. And they all work really well. I am particularly fond of the way you have incorporated both of each planet's own astronomical and mythological background into their respective character, like Saturn being an agrarian deity or Uranus's particular tilt, to name a few. You have done an amazing job. I would like to know if you are planning to put other celestial bodies in the story : Sun, Moon - and I am not talking about Pokémon - Halley's comet maybe... you made some reference to Triton, which means that these ten aren't the only characters you have in store. The Moon could be Earth's "non-human sidekick", like some sort of adorable rabbit, like in Japanese folklore... I am also curious to know who is the one pulling the strings behind Pluto. A black hole maybe, the darkest thing there is in the universe...

Ahhh Gustov Holst! How many times have I listened to your pieces as I worked on this? Either way, it's quite obviously the inspiration for the name of the deviation! And Bananaramma's Venus, I'd not heard before this, so thanks for introducing me.
I'm so glad you noticed that I've given them characteristics based on their actual planetary bodies, and the mythological figures who's names they borrow. That was always gonna be a thing on my part, and not many people know about the planets in detail, so I love that you were able to figure that out. For example, Neptune's high-speed winds and storms make him a figurative "hurricane," always rushing all over the place. And Venus' retrograde spin and metal-meltingly hot surface make her a stubborn, (and hot) challenger of the norm.
As a matter of fact, I was planning on having other celestial objects included. Though I was thinking of limiting it to the Planets, Dwarf Planets and Moons, with the minor space objects being faceless drones or something of that nature. I mean, I'm only doing a group of Moons for each planet, and that already puts the total number of characters up to 34, So I've already got my hands full!
AND DANG IT! How are you so good at guessing things? I swear you're sneaking into my house or something. Yup, it's a black hole. His name's Void, and he seeks to swallow up the entire Galaxy; NO, THE UNIVERSE!

What can I say ? I love The Planets suite, I even named one of my own Paper Mario character after Gustav Holst (to keep on with the fact that Bowser's children are named after famous musicians - I am among the people who still go by the cannon that the Koopalings are Bowser's offspring and thus Junior's siblings - as he is supposed to be the Koopa king who founded the royal Koopa line, and as a nod to the fact that a lot of Bowser's themes were inspired by Mars, the bringer of War). And I thought that Venus was a really suitable song for... well, Venus, since it has some sort of "I don't give a fuck about you, I do my own thing" vibe. At least, it's how I see it.
To be honest, I am more knowledgeable about the mythological part of the different planets background, so I will problably miss a lot of your astronomical references, other than the most obvious ones, so don't hesitate to put some explanatory notes. I am really curious to know every detail.
Does it mean that there wont be a flamboyant sun dude in the cast ? I am utterly disappointed. Just kidding XD. It sounds really great, I am impatient to see what will be everyone's role.
Haha, you know what they say, great minds think alike. Or maybe I am quietly hidding in your closet, who know, maybe I am waiting for you to sleep to look at the contents of your computer, maybe I am behind you right now... No, it's probably just the "think alike" thing. Or maybe not... And so, the big bad wants to destroy the world because he is hungry. Woah, I was told that Gluttony was a sin, but were are reaching a whole new level... I cannot wait to see it. It looks really interesting so far.

Oh wow, that's cool you named a character after Holst! That's kinda ingenious. You should totally name some mountain dwelling character after Edvard Grieg at some point! Just a thought, ahah.
And you're completely right about Venus. After listening to it, I can safely say the song does totally fit Venus' maximum attitude and sass. Good choice!
Oh, I'm quite the opposite myself. I know way more about their astronomical properties than their mythological ones. I guess if I ever need any help, I'll come to you for that. Oh, I'd absolutely love to put explainations for everything I think of, though I'm sure that's a list that's far too long. Let's see, I'll give some general ones though; All the planets with rings have white scarves of some kind. Uh... As I hinted at in the description, Earth has a smoking habit brought on by our industrialized civilization. The colors of Jupiter's coat, going horizontally across his chest (brown, white, brown, red, brown, white, brown) correspond to the major cloud bands in Jupiter's atmosphere. And Uranus' penchant for everything awkward is obviously because of the planet's bizarre tilt and off-kilter magnetic field.
Ha! Jokes on you, there is no closet in the living room, my computer is password protected and the only thing behind me is a---mpphdhjkhskg...
........
You're good
And you don't understand how hard I laughed at that 'gluttony as a sin' comparison. That was really clever!

Haha, you know what is funny - or scary, it's a matter of point of view - I was listening to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" just before taking a look at your comment. Well, it was a remix, but it's the same idea... And you are right, I should totally do this ! I don't have any character like this in mind for now (well, I have one who could fit the bill, but I already have a naming pattern in mind for this one, and by the bye do you have any competencies for Tolkien's elvish language ?) but I take note of the idea.
And by the way, if you liked the Conchita song, you may like to know that it's part of a whole musical series based around the seven deadly sins, the Chronicles of Evillious (it even has its own wiki . And we cannot part without a last song, can we : what do you think about this one ?

I think my favourites are Uranus, Pluto and "Uncle Marty" xD

Oh goodie, I appreciate the comment. I plan to do more with them, but that's gonna be for a later time (both because I'm STILL waiting for a new tablet, and because I want to work on Paper Mario again). For the meantime, thank you very much.
And you get it? Cold and distant? 'Cause he's quite literally cold and distant. Hahah! My humor is infinitely bad. As for "Uncle Marty", I just thought it fit the stereotype of a girlish neice having petnames for her family.)
