James Lance had long thought he wanted rid of the hellish curse cast upon his soul. When, at last, he was able to break the deal, through his own underhanded duplicity and the small matter of taking a Duke of Hell hostage, he was finally free. Suddenly he found himself adrift, without purpose. To that end, he prayed. He asked not for redemption, but for a new mission. He didn’t know angels well, but he assumed they were a safer bet than returning to the arms of the Devil. He was wrong. It transpired that angels are every bit as soul-hungry as demons. They jumped at the chance to have a reaper of their own in the field. Imbuing Lance once more with supernatural gifts, he became a terrible and vigilant spirit of vengeance, ready to strike out at the wicked. Hearing that his old neighbourhood of Cedar City was short of a holy avenger since the passing of Shroud, James Lance stepped into the role as a new supernatural protector of the streets.
