Hardened gumshoe Devlin Kole was getting close to the answers. The conspiracy went high. The Mayor was involved. The commissioner too. There was no end in sight to the weaving web of crime and corruption. But he was unravelling it. He was getting there. At least, he was. Until famed killer for hire The Scotsman, buried him alive in Cedar City Cemetery. Kole lay there, unable to escape. Instead, he distracted himself, waiting for someone to notice he was missing and free him. Devlin counted. Seconds. Minutes. Hours. Days. Weeks. Months. Years. He counted numbers in his head, creating new systems for organising the vast figures he tallied up. Unable to do anything else, his mind turned into a living calculator. For so long he was so far removed from his own consciousness that the terrible truth didn’t hit him. He had been buried in the winter of ’31. And he’d been counting for six years. That’s when he knew he was dead. And still counting. And so, he simply left. What was left of Devlin Kole rose up out of his grave and made the long walk back down the hill and into Cedar City. There was work to be done. A conspiracy to uncover. And if death was all that could stop him last time round…well then, he had nothing left to fear.
