Amen on the &! Nice capture. Is an engine with this longer "hood" called an "American cab" model? I'm not up on all the tech-talk.

Perhaps it refers to the "hood" in front, as opposed to the flat-front Euro engines.

this type unit would normally be called a standard cab, also known as a spartan cab, this pic here [link] is also a standard cab.

there are not alot of locos being made now in the u.s. that are standard cabs. they have mostly switched to the comfort cab like this here [link] it is also called the canadian cab or the wide cab.

the old units like here [link] were called end cabs or switchers.

finally [link] the CN unit there closest to the camera is reffered to as a full cowl unit because the cowling covers everything. there are no outside walkways on the locos like most. mostly you will find these units on passenger service because they don't want people climbing onto the loco and in passenger service that is more likely to occur than in freight service.

THAT's probably the one I was thinking of! Thanks! Does it have a long or short "hood."

thats the north american safety cab.. also called wide cab... these are the predominant cabs today on longer routes with the older units with standards cabs relegated to yard duties.

here is the best article i can find on the net about the cab... though its more about a locomotive model it does discuss the cabs a bit... hope it helps

I figured it referred to him catching a rare loco and you not, so I got the good-natured part of it, not to worry. Hell, I've said it out loud to myself when viewing some of the things you've seen out there that I have yet to see anywhere.

Anyone who actually took that seriously I'd have to smack for doing so. If the "lol" didn't give it away, there's no hope.
