Ariel is beautifully colored. The highlights and shadows are wonderfully detailed, and the shimmer of the water's surface is a really great subtle touch. The background is a bit iffy though. It's colored well, but the short range of contrast compared to Ariel and the rocks in the foreground make it look flat. I think at the top, the short range of contrast works, but as it goes to the sea floor, I feel like the shadows should get darker, the way the rocks in the foreground do.

Point taken, thanks for the thoughtful critic. Still I'd avoid doing the background any darker because it could end up being obscured. Besides, a clearer background is needed when the foreground is this dark to create contrast.
I think I understand what you mean here in the end: the background could use more depth to differentiate the upper part from the bottom, is it right?

Maybe just darken and/or thicken the outlines of the background to imply a shift to darkness. But yes, to differentiate the parts and add depth.
