Description
My first Poppy Quail beside the original Poppy Quail concept sketch. The sketch was colored with watercolors using primarily three colors; orange, blue, and purple. All the browns in the wings were made with layers of blue and orange. I had a few reference images of real Californai quails when I was sculpting, but the sketch was made from memory and is not as accurate to their markings.

Sometimes I do sketches like these as samples for commission projects. They help me conceptualize shape and color before I sculpt. It's also a nice opportunity to draw and paint when I don't have as much time to do that anymore.
