"How 'bout taking out the trash?"For the fifth installment of my Dual Screen series, we have my personal favorite; Rainbow Dash.
I must say, this is the first of its kind to actually challenge me. I don't have much experience with night scenes so I was sort of flying blind with it, and hoping it would come out at least half-way decent. I think it did, though I'm hardly a good enough judge of my own work.

The program is called Art Academy. There are two versions, a first and second semester. Both have all the same features though.

Answer to everything. "Why is the pony missing a head? It's just my style!" But honestly it is very awesome. The eyelashes mix with the face well to give her a more feminine look well the smile and eyes help keep her sass at top performance.

Well, first off I started with a simple sketch of the screenshot. I then tweaked the eyes, ears, mane, face, and apple to liking, and proceeded to the painting process, starting with a flat wash of indigo blue over the background. Next, I mixed lighter and darker tints and shades of the background color and applied them to the top and bottom of the picture in gradients. After that, I mixed a very light blue and used that for the stars, finishing the background. For Rainbow Dash herself, I started with my best imitation of her coat color in a flat layer over her hoof, face, and neck, as well as a flat layer for the mane, eye, and apple colors. Once all the ground work was done, I started the detailing with her eyes, using no fewer than eight different shades for each area of color. After I was done with the eyes, I applied a darker layer of blue over her face and hoof, and started working in darker shadows and adding the very light blue highlights along the edges. The next task (probably the most challenging part of this piece) was her mane. I went through the same process with each section, mixing the base color, shades and tints, and applying it all in at least a somewhat convincing manner. After that it was just a simple matter of finishing the apple, which I had tremendous fun with, and then it was a completed painting.

Wow! I never noticed that. I also never expected any of my work (especially a small, experimental painting that only took five days) to be compared to such a prestigious masterpiece. I suppose I'll take that as a compliment.
