Description
Night falls gently on Autumn's final frigid day. With the land laid to rest by her icy lullaby, her sacred task complete, Autumn fades away, surrendering to the harsher reign of Winter.Winter. The fourth and final installment of my Four Seasons Ponies collection, and the end of a year-long project. I can't say Winter is my favorite season, but there's no denying its beauty.
Watercolor on 9x12 140 lb. Strathmore watercolor paper. Finished: 12/14/16.

I am really curious as to how you went about painting the trees. Did you meticulously block in colours around the white snow? Mad respect for you!

If only I could boast of such monumental patience and dexterity. I used masking fluid over a light wash of blue to preserve all those details while painting in the darker colors. Some watercolor purists might call it cheating, I call it a lifesaver.

Ooohh that explains so much. I had seen masking fluid around but somehow never made the connection honestly, if it gets the work done well and fast, by all means do it. Nonetheless, very impressive artwork and I love the use of layering!

Rarity always has the perfect outerwear for any occasion. She's perfect for your winter piece.
You did a great job capturing the spirit of Winter, the icy blues, purples and whites. It really does look like what I imagine the perfect winter setting looks like. Great job having the trees have a bend to them at the top. I know that's for perspective reasons and it's just that it gives them a grander, more imposing standpoint than if you would have left them as is.

I think she suits Winter about as well as Applejack suits Autumn. She was an easy choice for this one.
This is probably the most restricted palette I've ever painted in, and quite paradoxically the most liberating. Since most of my color choices were made when I selected my tubes, my biggest concern was value control. I can't tell you how happy I am with the perspective, this is really the look I was going for when I did "Spring", but there was just too much foreground and not enough curve to effectively sell the low angle.

Wow!! This is beautiful! The colors are amazing. The fact that this is traditional art and not digital just really speaks of your talent! I'm not putting down digital artists by any means, but traditional art just seems a lot less forgiving of mistakes, so this is just amazing.
I'm off to check out the rest of your gallery!

Watercolor is a very unforgiving medium. The only other one that rivals it in terms of difficulty is ink.

That's what usually keeps me from writing lengthy descriptions. Anytime I start getting carried away with it I realize I'm just repeating what I've already said in the picture.

To tell you the truth, it simply isn't convenient to limit yourself to a size of paper that can fit on your scanner, take several weeks to complete a project (all the while using costly materials), try to get a scan that isn't completely washed out, and at the end of it all spend a day and a half correcting colors and values in Photoshop because your scanner can't see red. Digital methods definitely have their advantages.
Thanks very much!

Indeed. Miraculously, this one didn't require any white ink touch-ups, so it's all pure watercolor.
Thanks very much!

Watercolors really suit Rarity well, the elegance, the soft shading, the beauty... Very nicely done.

Thanks!

This gorgeous scene gives me the chills, but in the good way. Rarity looks as elegant and lovely as ever even as she braves the chilly winds, letting her gorgeous mane and tail be blown by the icy air as she trudges along. I love the sweet moment of awe you captured in her face as she pauses and contributes to the magic of the season. The scenery is fantastic, with such beautiful colors for the wintry night, the right amount of sparse clouds to let the brightest stars shine through, and I love the perspective that captures the vastness and grandeur of the trees and mountain. As I look at the picture I can also feel myself there. The dancing crystal streamers are beautiful and quite wondrous too, adding a nice bit of lighting to the pony without overpowering the stars or other natural light. Also, her outfit is very winter chic. Fantastic work.

Thank you very much! This was one of those rare pieces where I pretty much knew exactly what I wanted form the start and came very close to my original vision with the finished painting. It doesn't happen very often, but I'm glad when it does.
