Description
This was a personal headcanon I'd had for a while since nothing about diglett really... makes sense... and I'm bored and tired and delirious so here, have a sketch with some exposition. When a diglett is finally old enough to leave its family, its main priority is to get stronger and tougher-- caught digletts are especially happy when a pokemon trainer adds them to their team because of this. Eventually, if they can put up an impressive enough fight in front of other favorable digletts, they can win themselves a mate. This can either be a male impressing a female, or a fierce female claiming a more submissive male.
Digletts have a cyclical life, starting out in a small community of dugtrios before striking out on their own to find a mate, and ultimately form a community of their own.
Diglett pairs generally prefer holding off on breeding until they have formed a safe enough community environment, but more often than not, the pair will mate at least once before this happens (resulting in the third head.) It is thought that this is a way for the two partners to test each others' genetics before any bigger steps are taken. If the offspring is unhealthy, the two parents will split up and try again with another diglett. In some cases one parent may try to continue caring for the sickly pup, but it's often just abandoned.
A healthy pup will instead encourage the mates to remain together, and continue to search for another "dugtrio" to begin creating a community with. It's an ideal situation, with two unrelated bloodlines providing each other children that can crossbreed. Digletts who feel too smothered by the community after a time will strike off on their own, becoming the lone little mole-creatures that trainers will so often encounter.
In captivity, the parent pair in a dugtrio can also feel safe enough to breed when another, bigger pokemon of a different species is provided for company.
As for my thoughts on Alolan dugtrio? I giggled when I first saw it. It's too stupid and glorious and cute in its own stupid way for me to be angry with it in the slightest.

I'm glad to have made such an in-depth masterpiece of a tiny footless mole. Gaze into its eyes, and see only glory.
