Description
Ta-da!I browsed a bit through dA and I couldn't find a tutorial on bird wings that really covered it ALL--from bones to wing shapes and feather groups. All the tuts I found seemed to assume that you were starting with some basic knowledge of how bird wings worked. I don't know if you are, so here's one that works from the ground up!
Yes, this is based off the tutorial style of the incomparable (Go read her tutorials on drawing humans; I promise you will learn something!) because I feel that it's a very clear and dynamic way to show people stuff. So yeah.
Other Stuff:
Interesting web sites, if you want to learn more:
[link] --Explore this site some--it has some really cool interactive stuff. Also that game! XD My bobolink always gets eaten halfway through.
[link] --some more in-depth stuff on the physics involved.
[link] --lots of info on wing shape and purpose!
Great reference books:
-Birds of Prey: Majestic Masters of the Skies by Paul D. Frost--glorious, two-page spreads full of raptor close-ups.
-Raptors of the World by James Ferguson-Lees and David A. Christie--what need I say?
-Reader's Digest Book of North American Birds -- beautifully illustrated, with cool tidbits of information about all the birds.
...and I don't want to hear that you don't have the money to buy books. Libraries need love too, and there is one near you--go get to know it!
All photos that are not from Wikipedia were taken by me. The canada goose picture was found here: [link] and the peregrine falcon here: [link] .
Phew. That was rather exhausting (and hopefully exhaustive!
Also: has a wonderful gallery full of images of birds in flight--go check it out, it's a great reference!
:EDIT: HOMFG A DD THANK YOU SO MUCH and !!!!!!

It was purely coincidential that I found and read this, as I have to admit I never draw birds, but if I ever do, I'll make sure to use this wonderful tutorial. It goes into depth on anatomy, which is crucial for drawing any creature, be it realistic or cartoon, and it's just written so well. It's funny, cute (the characters that pop up here and there are just delightful), lively, and very informative.

Oh wow, thank you so much! I'm so happy that so many people seem to find it helpful--I just love drawing birds and it makes me happy to think that I might have helped some people. Seriously, though, this comment is super sweet and it made me happy to read it!

Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial--it's seriously all the info I need (I'm making a pair of articulated wings for a cosplay) to lay feathers, not to mention you've demystified them for when I draw them in the future!!
Truly, truly spectacular (and entertaining!) tutorial.Β

This is very helpful! I've never even considered looking at wings this way! I'm such a derp lol.

TheAntimonyElement In reply to TaiYung [2014-08-28 19:37:40 +0000 UTC]
No, you're not a derp! Wings are really intimidating for people (kind of like human hands, which I can't draw for crap ) because they look so complicated and randomized. This tutorial just helps people notice the patterns; once you see how the wing is put together, it's a lot easier to draw.

Wonderful, this just helps me a lot!! (:
But I have one question, when you show the pictures of real birds, wahr kind of species is the first one (lightly on the right I think). It's feathers shimmer like a rainbow, so beautiful *-*
Sorry for my englisch, but actually I'm german, and . . . yeah, you knowΒ Β
Greetings, I hope it's ok that I asked a question OwO

Thank you so much for making this. I know quite a bit about drawing wings already, but it's always nice have a short cut at hand to help refresh my memory. Especially when you forget about the direct one troublesome feather is supposed to go.
