Description
My friends, this is it - with more polygons than the sum of all previous models, in the making since late February 2012, pages of sketches, about 10GB of total content - this is the big one, the crown jewel, the flagship of the fleet (so far)... For your viewing pleasure, the Smelter! This is one of the most detailed models I have done in my life! Recreating the Smelter was an amazing experience through-and-through as I cannot be more satisfied with the results. I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did and, once again, thank you very much for your support!
Statistics:

PS: Instead of my usual bullet-pointed feature list, I wrote a bit of fan-fiction around this bot, I hope it is a pleasant read.

RUR-21 - SMELTER
LIAISON NOTES
PTMC designed and built the 2-meter RUR-21s with the original purpose of overseeing slag determination throughout our mining facilities. Upgrades later diversified Smeltersβ role and their final build saw the addition of a Repulsor Smelting System that enabled them to fully take on determination, processing, and salvaging of slag.
The Repulsion Smelting System should be of interest to the Material Defender as it allowed RUR-21s to store and dispense limited amounts of plasma. It is only logical to assume its present use as a weapon by the Infection.
Analysts at PTMC Intelligence have produced limited intel on the Smelter, I have attached the excerpts from their reports that are relevant to you.
Regards,
S. Dravis.
PTMC-ID POST-INFECTION REPORT
PTMC INTELLIGENCE DIVISION
BOT CLASSIFICATION: RUR-21
BOT CODENAME: SMELTER
THREAT ASSESSMENT: MODERATE
Analysis of internal footage and orbital scans revealed Smelters have undergone heavy mutation:
- Excessive energy output emanating from observed samples indicate the on-board fusion reactor has been heavily overdriven. We suspect this modification has given Smelters the ability to generate virtually infinite amounts of hot plasma in-situ.
- Engineers suspect that some of the Smelter's internal components were removed in order to generate the necessary space within the chassis for all the observed modifications. Smelters must now have minimal energy shielding as this was the most cumbersome non-vital component in the original configuration.
- The Repulsion Smelting System has been modified. We suspect it to now handle the much higher volumes and pressures necessary for the use of hot plasma as an effective weapon of considerable range and destructive power. It is imperative to regard this modified R.S. System as an effective plasma throwing weapon. Additionally, observed modifications on the discharge nozzles strongly hint at a capability of use over medium and short ranges.
- Existing hull plating of RUR-21s has been extensively reinforced. Most prominent are the heavy armor plates observed to have been attached to the sides of the fuselage. This corroborates our belief that this robot now sports minimal energy shielding as the new reinforced hull can easily compensate.
ADDENDUM
Latest observations have hinted at the existence of a variant of the RUR-21 on certain facilities. These Smelters are heavily camouflaged and appear to be missing nearly all of their non-vital components including the Repulsion Smelting System. No additional data is available on this variant. We suspect they are being used for stowage and, as such, are of no threat to the Material Defender.
FINAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE MATERIAL DEFENDER
- When low on shields, the Material Defender is advised to avoid direct confrontations with Smelters as their plasma discharges will instantaneously dissolve any known alloy.
- It is of note that despite all the new armor, no changes were observed on the aft section of the hull - where the plasma expansion tank is still located. This tank is partially exposed. The Material Defender would be wise to engage Smelters from the rear as a kinetic or concussive impact there can rupture the highly-pressurized tank, causing a chain reaction that could severely cripple or destroy a Smelter (along with any adjacent materiel).
That is all Material Defender, prepare for Descent...

The level of detail on this just made me have a geekgasm!

I don't know where to start. You just made a humble descent 2 robot not only look more awesome, but more scary as well.
I'd love to see your version of the Zeta Aquilae boss. Probably shares some design features with the smelter.

Thank you very much
I'm doing these in order of appearance so yes, in time, I'll do the Red Fatty. Stay tuned!

I haven't logged into this account in like 8 years.. but I did just to comment. Have you seen minerwars yet?

Thank you very much, makes me feel very special
Yes, I've heard of Minerwars and I follow its development every now and then - really looking forward to it!

OMG, such a great work on this one!!
This is as for now my favorite one, followed by the P.I.G.
You're making such great renditions to our favorite PTMC robots.

YiKeS! Can't wait to see what's next!
Very original on the Bio, back-story and functionality of this futuristic depiction of a computer viral infected mining menace!

Holy freaking crap. That's just so amazingly detailed and complex, I can't begin to wrap my mind around it. I really never expected the Smelter to be one of the most detailed models in the set, but at this point, I can't imagine what the E-Bandit or the bosses (that is, if you do model the bosses) will end up looking like. This just completely blew my mind.

Well, my "commitment" to the project grew with each model I did and the Smelter is the latest thus far. I do certainly hope to continue the trend and, yes, I am doing the bosses as well . Thanks for the support man.
